Advisors Tour Pasadena City College Makerspace

The CCC Maker Advisory Committee met at Pasadena City College on January 27. The highlight of the day was meeting students and faculty, and seeing their projects in the Fab Lab on campus.

The initiative team reported that 35 colleges are participating in the seed grant Makerspace Start-up process through June 2017. With support from CCC Maker service providers, they will develop unique makerspace plans for their colleges. The plans include understanding the surrounding ecosystem, embedding making into the curriculum, establishing partnerships with businesses to offer internships and developing inclusive makerspaces.

In addition, the committee discussed trends in the national and international maker community. Dale Dougherty, Chair, CCC Maker Advisory Committee and CEO Maker Media, Inc. said that one outcome of college makerspaces is that they enable students to quickly become contributors through real world experiences that are meaningful to them.

The advisors also discussed how to better connect colleges with businesses to increase opportunities for internships, mentoring and training at the makerspaces.
