Students learning coding basics to prepare for tech-filled future

One of Northwest ISD's goals is to produce well-rounded students. On one end of that spectrum, students visit the district's OLC to learn about the environment and nature directly in the outdoors. This month, many schools are operating on the other end of the spectrum, learning about computer programming.

To help prepare students for a tech-focused future, schools across the country are taking part in "Hour of Code," a global event designed to teach coding fundamentals through one-hour courses that provide a building block for future interest in programming.
At Roanoke Elementary, every grade level - even kindergarten - participated in Hour of Code over a two-week span.

Trustees approve Leo Adams Middle School name
At their most recent board meeting, Northwest ISD trustees unanimously voted to approve naming the district's next middle school, currently under development near Eaton High School, after Leo Adams, an instrumental figure in the school district's formation.

Mr. Adams was a longtime mayor of Justin and inaugural board member for Northwest ISD in 1948 when several smaller school districts (in Haslet, Justin, Rhome and Roanoke) decided to consolidate. He personally met with state lawmakers to assist in the district's creation. The school's name and location also has a dual meaning, as Mr. Adams was close friends with V.R. Eaton.

A groundbreaking ceremony for the school was held yesterday, with fourth-graders from Schluter Elementary School who are anticipated to attend Adams when it's scheduled to open in 2018 helping turn dirt.

Parent survey ends today

Today is the final day of the districtwide parent survey, which helps schools ensure they are continuously improving to meet the needs of students and the community.

Through the survey, parents and guardians are asked to identify strengths and areas needing improvement at each campus they have children. The survey is accessible online  in both English and Spanish at www.nisdtx.org/parentsurvey  and focuses on:
  • Campus climate
  • Safety
  • Communications
  • Instructional programs
  • Support services
If you prefer a paper copy, please call 817-215-0171. Thank you for your participation in helping the district work toward achieving its mission of providing all students with a premier education!
About 2,000 participate in Reindeer Romp, with results now available online

Thanks to everyone who took part in the ninth annual Reindeer Romp this past weekend! The 5K event had 1,072 participants, while the 1-mile fun run had 930 participants, all of whom helped our schools simply by registering for a run. Proceeds from the event benefit P.E. departments at all Northwest ISD schools.

Northwest ISD community donates nearly 10,000 pounds of food to those in need
Thanks to the generosity of Northwest ISD students, families and community members, 9,823 pounds of food will go to struggling families this holiday season.

The food was raised as part of the "Fill the Bus" competition sponsored by Durham Transportation and Aramark, and it will go to local food pantries to provide families in need. Roanoke Elementary School won the campus competition by donating an average of 4 pounds of food per student.
Reminder on district inclement weather procedures

During extreme weather conditions, Northwest ISD continues to keep the safety of students and staff a top priority. When inclement weather conditions are forecast, the district closely monitors weather conditions and reports.

Northwest ISD partners with Durham School Services to travel the roads to inspect actual conditions. Additionally, the Facilities, Planning and Construction Department monitors all buildings for power outages, water leaks and other weather-related damages that may occur. The district tries to make the decision to cancel school prior to 5:30 a.m. so school closures can be communicated quickly to media, staff, parents and students.
