Paula's ponderings
Hello Members,

What would you do if your business had a fire? Flood? Tornado?  Do you know first steps to take to recover?  We know you have many things to handle on a daily basis to run your business.  Do yourself a favor and take 75 minutes to join us Sept. 21 for a workshop that will help you have those initial answers if disaster should strike.

The Danville-Boyle County Chamber of Commerce is hosting a regional Disaster Preparedness workshop on September 21, from 8:30-10 a.m. at the Boyle County Public Library.  Chambers in Garrard, Lincoln and Mercer, as well as the Heart of Danville, are co-hosting the workshop.

Speakers include Michael Ashcraft, Senior Area Manager for Economic Development &Public Information for the Small Business Administration in Louisville, and Alison Broady, Stakeholder Liaison, in the Internal Revenue Service Communications & Liaison Office in Nashville.

It takes years to build a successful business, but just minutes to be destroyed by a disaster.
Business owners should:
  • Understand their vulnerabilities
  • Plan for a disaster
  • Periodically test the disaster plan
SBA provides training on disaster preparation and recovery as well as information on disaster recovery resources for your small business or nonprofit organization.   They also provide low-interest disaster loans to businesses of all sizes, private nonprofit organizations, homeowners, and renters.  SBA disaster loans can be used to repair or replace real estate, personal property, machinery and equipment, and inventory and business assets damaged or destroyed in a declared disaster.

Michael will provide the 50+ page workbook to each participant on how to assess disaster risks, how to prepare for a disaster, how to communicate during and after a crisis, and how to recover more quickly. He will also share a copy of the PowerPoint and a couple other handouts.  Alison will share record keeping tips for your business, IRS hot topics, and will discuss tax relief provided in disaster situations.

To register, call the Chamber at 859-236-2361, ext. 120

Don't take the bait . . .
Think a data breach can't happen to you? Think again... "Don't Take the Bait."

Tax professionals increasingly are targets of national and international cybercriminal syndicates that are well funded, digitally adept and tax savvy. Each week the IRS receives three to five reports of data breaches at tax professionals' offices. That rate is not sustainable.

To assist tax practitioners to better protect themselves, the IRS, state tax agencies and the tax industry, partnering as the Security Summit, have launched a 10-week " Don't take the Bait" campaign detailing specific scam tactics and how to counter them.  These news items are being issued each Tuesday.

Here are the first three news releases plus an associated fact sheet.
