Not a Plane or Superman
On August 21, 2017, all of North America was treated to an eclipse of the sun. Although Barrow County was not directly on the path to witness a total solar eclipse, we were on the path to witness a significant partial eclipse of the sun. In Barrow County, the moon blocked approximately 98% of the sun. For many, this was a once in a lifetime experience. Through a fund-raising campaign, the Barrow County School System purchased eclipse-safe viewing glasses for students and staff.
School Nutrition staff joined the fun dressed in eclipse shirts and shades while serving cheeseburgers on star bread with sun chips and moon pies.

BCSS REACH Scholars Explore GA Aquarium
REACH Georgia (Realizing Educational Achievement Can Happen) welcomed rising ninth grade scholars from across the state to the Georgia Aquarium for a special REACH Georgia Day at the Aquarium. Scholars from Barrow County School System had a fun enjoyable learning experience. They learned about aquatic animal conservation and research while exploring the galleries and participating in the audience at both the Dolphin Celebration, and Waddle Walk. These two presentations showcased animal behavior and helped students learn about the plight of species while teaching them how to support ocean health and protect endangered animals. Students enjoyed lunch at Café Aquaria sponsored by Sam's Club.

"Where Reading Comes to Life"
Parents, family, and friends joined Holsenbeck Elementary School for the annual summer reading parade. Students dressed up as their favorite book character and celebrated reading ten or more books over the summer. We learned what happens when you give a mouse a cookie!
