There is a "lot of change to come" according to Australian Olive Association chief executive officer, Greg Seymour. Speaking this week at his first National Olive Industry Conference since taking up the reins in March this year, Mr Seymour said he felt there was a cautious optimism among growers he'd spoken to while coming up to speed with the industry.

Australians love their olive oil — we went through 40,000 tonnes of the green, yellowy liquid last year. It is a staple in kitchens around the country, but do we really know what quality olive oil tastes like? Victorian olive grower Peter Eicher thinks Australians need to be re-educated about how fresh olive oil should excite our taste buds.

Best picks: Cooking method can make a big difference when it comes to locking in nutrients. philipimage
Nutrition Week kicked off in Australia yesterday and this year's theme is Try for 5, a friendly reminder to get in those five serves of veggies every day. Eating enough vegetables is one thing, but there's no doubt everyone wants to make sure they're getting the most bang for their buck in terms of nutrition.

One of the best methods is, of course, sautéing in olive oil.
The ACCC has launched a new online tool for people in the agriculture sector to anonymously report concerns about competition or fair trading issues, allowing farmers to report potential breaches of laws the ACCC enforces. This could include, for example, suspected breaches of the new Horticulture Code of Conduct. The information received will be used as the basis of potential investigations but will always remain anonymous. Access the tool here .

A “large proportion” of European shoppers are buying “healthy”, organic, vegetarian and free-from foods, new research from IRI reveals.

Organic EVOO fits all of those categories: let’s hope the trend is reflected in Australia and NZ too.
Half a litre of olive oil produced from a 1,800-year-old olive tree sold for 22,000 Turkish lira ($6,046) in the ancient city of Teos in Izmir's Seferihisar district in western Turkey.

Wouldn’t we like that kind of return on our locally-produced oil?
