October 2017
Presidential Address
by Carolina Herrera, P.E.

Our September luncheon featured Ben Broussard, Director of Marketing and Membership Development of LOGAS (Louisiana Oil and Gas Association). Mr. Broussard provided an insight into the value of the petrochemical industry to our State, and the impact of the fluctuating global market in our economy. He touched on the political and environmental challenges this industry faces today, and also discussed the advancements in the development of more efficient drilling processes and technologies.

Our October luncheon will be equally interesting as we tackle another very important subject for our State: the Coastal Master Plan. Our speaker will be Mr. Michael Ellis, Executive Director of the Coastal Protection and Restoration Authority (CPRA). This luncheon will also serve as the licensing ceremony where LAPELS and LES welcome Engineer Interns, Surveying Interns, Professional Surveyors and Professional Engineers into our ranks.

Our annual LES –Baton Rouge Chapter Sporting Clays Tournament will take place this Friday at the Bridgeview Gun Club. This event is open to Non-LES members and members of other LES chapters. Hope to see you there.

Update from the LES Board of Directors Meeting
At the last LES Board of Directors meeting, few amendments to the LES Constitution and Bylaws were presented and approved with the majority of the votes. Most of these amendments are associated with the decision of the LES to become a non-affiliated member in the new NSPE integrated model (this integrated model would reduce LES control over its finances and would increase the cost of the dual membership to $299.00/year starting on July of 2018).

Because LES elected to be non-integrated, effective immediately, members will get to choose at their next renewal, if they would like to belong to either LES ($95.00/year) or NSPE ($299.00/year starting on July 2018) or both ($95.00+$299.00 = $394.00). For all members that currently hold dual membership, NSPE will honor it until its expiration. Another important decision made in this meeting, was the reduction of the student membership cost - students will enjoy free membership!
