| President Williams Kicks off Academic Year, Welcomes Back Faculty |

"You are. We are. I am SPC" was this year's theme at the annual Fall Faculty welcome back event held at the St. Petersburg Coliseum earlier this month. Dr. Tonjua Williams and members of the College leadership team highlighted the collaboration between faculty and staff and the institution's focus on student success. Dr. Williams used an interactive poll to help illustrate SPC's impact on its students, College employees and the larger community. She stressed the importance of advancing culture, communication, collaboration and creativity to meet the challenges ahead.
The program also included updates from the Faculty Governance Organization, the Center for Excellence in Teaching and Learning, Academic Pathways and the SACS/Quality Enhancement Plan. As part of the festivities, the College named eight Professors Emeriti in recognition of their tireless dedication to helping generations of SPC students succeed:

The SPC Foundation Board of Directors convened over 30 Foundation donors at the President's Roundtable Luncheon in June to welcome in-coming College President, Dr. Tonjua Williams. Dr. Williams provided a state-of-the-college address and shared her vision for ensuring the continued success of St. Petersburg College and its students.
The event also included a presentation of the President's Circle Award in recognition of the generous support provided by five distinguished donors. Alfred May, Helen Gilbart and Helen Leslie were honored for the significant impact they have had on the lives of SPC students. Dr. Walter and Vivian Schafer were honored posthumously for their support of SPC's Baccalaureate Nursing Program, with grandson Kurt Schafer accepting the award on their behalf. |
| LRMA Curator Christine Renc-Carter's Latest Exhibition Heralded in the Press |
The
Tampa Bay Times recently featured the current exhibit at Leepa-Rattner Musuem of Art. "Paradise Found: LRMA Celebrates 15 Years" showcases the exemplary talent of museum curator Christine Renc-Carter and features local artists' interpretations of paradise. With roots in the area, Renc-Carter brought her knowledge of the local art scene to LRMA when she took the curator position last year. The
Tampa Bay Times, who attributes the exhibition's personal feel to Renc-Carter's love of the Tampa Bay area wrote, "Her selections feel like a personal excavation of images, relationships and landscapes
known since birth."

Women participate in engineering activity at Women2STEM event
|
The second annual Women2STEM kicked off last month to a packed room on Clearwater Campus. The purpose of the program is to encourage women to work toward careers in science, technology, engineering, and math-- further strengthening our local workforce with highly skilled women. At the first workshop, guests networked and participated in hands-on activities with industry experts, educators and women already established in successful STEM careers. Women from local employers including Morphogenesis, Tech Data, Florida Wildlife and MedXChange spoke with students about getting started in the STEM industries. SPC student Ronelia Bailey said, "The workshop was a great way to meet people and connect. Hearing from women who work in the field right now was very encouraging!"
Women in STEM careers earn 30 percent more than women who work in non-STEM jobs, according to the White House Office of Technology Policy. Employers are looking for smart, creative women to work in STEM jobs, especially in science. The four-week program was offered at not cost to participants and included a series of career exploration activities.

Dr. Dan Schroeder has found a way to keep his Anatomy and Physiology students engaged and excited about the medical field. He finds local medical professionals, including SPC alumni, to "speed network" with his students. The students ask questions and find out more about the vast job opportunities available within the medical field. Anatomy/Physiology is the gateway course to all other medical courses at SPC and nationally has a high drop-out rate due to the challenging coursework. Dr. Schroeder inspires his students to continue to work hard and complete his course.
Over past two summers, Dr. Schroeder and his students have also visited Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital in St. Petersburg. During the visits, students tour the LifeLine Transport Team's rooftop helipad and the Clinical Education Simulation Lab. This real-world view into the bustling hospital setting broadens his students' perspectives. "They learn about all sorts of cool opportunities that they weren't even aware of," said Dr. Schroeder. |
