Cepero Park under construction
New Parks are Beautifying Your Neighborhoods

A number of capital projects are underway bringing new passive parks to your neighborhood.  Under construction are the Betsy Adams and the Coral Gables Garden Club Park to include sidewalks, amphitheater, playground and landscaping at 4650 Alhambra Circle. This park is named in honor of Ms. Adams, a civic leader and member of the Garden Club who over the last 56 years has organized several city entrance projects, the Merrick statue in front of City Hall, and the statue of Althea Merrick at the Merrick House. Also underway are landscape improvements at a triangular passive park  located at 4600 San Amaro Drive named the Enrique "Henry" Cepero Memorial Park. Mr. Cepero was a longtime resident of Coral Gables and was an award-winning cancer researcher before he passed away at the early age of 33. Read more...

Pedestrian Overpass at UM Metrorail Station is Now Open

pedestrian bridge

Good news for UM students heading back to class: The pedestrian overpass bridge structure, located at the intersection of South Dixie Highway and Mariposa Court (next to the University Metrorail Station) is now open. Pedestrians crossing US1 now have a safer access to both sides when walking through the busy intersection. Students lobbied for the construction of the pedestrian bridge after a freshman was struck and killed by a car while crossing in 2005. Miami-Dade County is planning a dedication ceremony onsite for Wednesday, September 13, at 10 a.m.
Parking Day
Be Part of PARK(ing) Day 2017

The City of Coral Gables is encouraging all local businesses to participate in PARK(ing) Day 2017, which is taking place all day on Friday, September 15. Last year, there were eight on-street parking locations that were temporarily turned into enjoyable public places. This international event raises awareness about the importance of a walkable, livable, healthy city and helps people re-think how our streets can be used.  If your business is interested in participating, please submit an application no later than September 1. Take Back Medicine Program is Successful in First Year

Last year, the City of Coral Gables became the first municipality in Miami-Dade County to partner with Covanta Dade Renewable Energy to take back unused prescription drugs to avoid misuse at home and dispose of them in an environmentally safe manner. After a year of collecting them at a drop-off bin installed at the lobby of the Public Safety Building, the City disposed of a total of 139.7 pounds of prescription drugs that historically would have gone either to landfills or flushed down the toilet.  Expired or unwanted prescription drugs can still be dropped off 24 hours a day, seven days a week, at the lobby of 2801 Salzedo Street.

Birdie visits Coco and Mr. Green Jean
Three Little Birds Smile with Rising Sun

Coral Gables resident Carmen Piña has an interesting story to share with her neighbors. She has seen a lot of surprising animals while living on Alhambra Circle and Cortez like a fox, parrots, bats, and even the casual peacock. But a lovely yellow canary, in her own words, "has been amazing to watch." Her neighbors spotted this free-flying bird when he started visiting their canaries, Coco and Mr. Green Jean (pictured inside the cage). When they left on vacation and left Carmen in charge of the birdies, not a day passed by that this yellow canary didn't fly into their yards to greet Coco with morning kisses and offer Mr. Green Jean his fair share of love. The morning routine included watching Carmen's every move as she gently opened the jar of bird seeds to pour him his breakfast onto a dish. The gentle - and smart - bird knows to return just in time for supper. Got an interesting story to share? Email us at enews@coralgables.com
