There's no rational reason for Friday the 13th to be any more or less fortunate than the other 364 days in a year. Yet, many people still approach the date with apprehension, if not dread. This can have a dramatic toll on companies. Remember when stocks plunged from a failed United Airlines buyout in 1989? How about when the Costa Concordia cruise ship sank in 2012? Those happened on Friday the 13th.
According to
CNBC, "The Stress Management Center and Phobia Institute estimates
between $700 million and $800 million are lost every Friday the 13th because of people's refusal to travel, purchase major items or conduct business."

Pro-Manufacturing Economic Reforms Require Fully Functioning Government
National Association of Manufacturers (NAM) President and CEO Jay Timmons issued the following statement on the Bureau of Labor Statistics' December employment data:
"Despite an increase in manufacturing employment in December, the sector lost 45,000 workers in 2016. That is unacceptable. To really accelerate job growth and fully reach our economic potential, manufacturers are looking to the incoming Trump administration to take bold actions, beginning on day one. To spur job creation right here in the United States, we want to see smart reforms on regulations, taxes, health care, energy and more. But to achieve that, we need a fully functioning government, so we are calling on the Senate to act swiftly on the president-elect's Cabinet nominees. Unnecessary delays mean lost opportunities for manufacturers and the men and women who make things in America.
"Manufacturers and the NAM appreciate the incoming administration's willingness to listen to our concerns and seek our insights. If leaders on both sides of the aisle can come together, we can revitalize modern manufacturing in America-and lift our economy and country to new heights."

Yesterday
as the 71st General Assembly convened, both Senate President Kevin Grantham (R-Canon City) and House Speaker Crisanta Duran (D-Denver) acknowledged present and future transportation needs facing our state. Both lawmakers spoke to the importance of solving our state's transportation challenges.
While the growing population is adding to the gridlock felt by commuters on a day-to-day basis, roads and bridges are in need of repair and expansion. Fix Colorado Roads is a broad-based, statewide coalition of business leaders and local government officials dedicated to finding a permanent and reliable fund for transportation projects and improvements. The organization and its members are dedicated to working with lawmakers this legislative session to ensure the topic does not go unresolved.

The Council of Chief State School Officers (CCSSO) and JPMorgan Chase & Co. announced this week $20 million in grants to dramatically increase the number of students who graduate from high school prepared for careers. Developed as part of JPMorgan Chase's $75 million global New Skills for Youth initiative, each winning state will work with government, business and education leaders to strengthen career education and create pathways to economic success.
"The number of young people who graduate from high school without the necessary skills to compete is one of the greatest moral and economic inequities of our time," said Jamie Dimon, Chairman and CEO, JPMorgan Chase. "These investments will help states build career education programs that align with the needs of growing industries and give young people a chance to succeed."
Dimon
has just begun a two year term as Chairman of Business Roundtable.
