SENIOR SPOTLIGHT

Vanessa Bravo

What's the most difficult part about senior year?  The most difficult part about senior year is keeping up with responsibilities.  I have to multi-task and manage my time to get things done.

Have you gone on any college visits? What did you think of them?
I visited Norwich University to attend their Regimental Ball. I loved the view of the hills and trees. I liked their church, library, and the on-campus food.

What advice do you have for high school freshmen, sophomores, and juniors? Grades matter!  Focus on yourselves, your studies, and it'll be great!

What activities do you want to be involved in during college?
I definitely want to continue ROTC in college, join the choir, and be on the volleyball team.
VOLUNTEER SPOTLIGHT

Janet Meyers

What are your hobbies? I take piano lessons. I like to go on long bike rides. And I like to read comics, especially "Big Nate" and "Pearls Before Swine."

What is your current/past career? Please describe your journey to that career field. A friend convinced me to help edit our high school newspaper. I liked it so much that I worked all four years at my college's daily newspaper and then worked for newspapers and magazines.

What advice would you give a high school senior? You can be successful wherever you go to college. Just try as many new things as you can. Once you find something that you really enjoy, the rest will fall into place.

SEARCHING & APPLYING FOR SCHOLARSHIPS

Scholarships are free money for you to attend college. There are tons of scholarship opportunities and you should apply for them to reduce the amount of money that you and your family will have to pay for your education.

There are two main sources of scholarships:
  • Scholarships from colleges: Many colleges offer scholarships based on merit (such as a high GPA or strong test scores), financial need, or athletic ability. Check your college's financial aid websites for information on scholarship opportunities, eligibility, requirements, and applications.
  • Scholarships from private or outside organizations: Private groups offer money for different reasons, including community involvement, service experience, ethnicity and location. Pick up a CollegeTracks Scholarship Packet for a list of scholarships for which you are eligible!
Similar to college applications, scholarship applications may require that you complete application forms, write essays, ask for letters of recommendation, and submit additional materials.  Know your deadlines and plan ahead so you submit your applications on time!
