Sixteenth Street WIC prioritizes breastfeeding

Breastfeeding is a top priority at Sixteenth Street WIC and is incorporated into care at all levels. It starts at every first visit for a new pregnancy, and the exposure to services and support continues through  all subsequent visits.

Extending beyond the visits are opportunities for women and men to connect with a culturally competent Breastfeeding Peer Counselor (BPC), participate in group education, meet with one of our many certificated lactation specialists on staff and receive breast pumps and related supplies through insurance or other WIC qualifying situations.

It is our goal to introduce pregnant woman to our BPC at the first WIC visit to build rapport and trust early, familiarizing women with all the services and support they have available. Group education is incorporated as a final WIC contact with all pregnant women prior to delivery, highlighting infant behaviors and cues specifically related to hunger, fullness, and breastfeeding.

At all points of contact WIC is ready to encourage and help successful breastfeeding for moms and their babies.
Periscope Project fills critical gap

The Periscope Project is a recently implemented initiative by the
Medical College of Wisconsin aimed at connecting providers treating pregnant women with mental health or substance abuse needs to perinatal psychiatrists, to provide guidance and assistance with care. It offers provider to provider teleconsultation, community resource information and free online provider education. Sixteenth Street's Midwifery Department is an avid user of this new resource and can already see its impact.

"I was able to use this service for a pregnant woman with sever anxiety. She came to me with urgent concerns and an inability to function. I used tools from the periscope project to assess her condition and then spoke with a psychiatrist through the project to come up with a plan for medications that would allow the patient to get relief from her symptoms but stay safe during pregnancy. We were able to accomplish all of this during her visit.  The ability to access real-time experts and tools for this population is crucial to providing the best care possible," said Tracy Hermann, CNM, Director of Midwifery at Sixteenth Street.

Thank you to the Medical College of Wisconsin for providing such a valuable resource for our patients and community!
Sixteenth Street celebrates National Community Health Center Week with a visit from CBS 58's Garna Mejia and a sit down with Julie Schuller, President and CEO

Garna Mejia, Reporter at CBS 58/Telemundo, took the time to visit our Chavez Clinic and talk with Julie Schuller, President and CEO, about the programming, services and impact of Sixteenth Street in the community during National Community Health Center Week.

Community Health Centers are driven by a belief in high quality, accessible healthcare that minimizes linguistic, cultural and economic barriers. We are committed to building healthier communities through high quality healthcare, but also through closing access gaps, narrowing health disparities and addressing social determinants of health beyond the exam room out in the community.

We sincerely thank Garna and CBS 58 for taking the time to showcase our work and value during an important week of celebration and advocacy.

"At first I was afraid. I didn't know how I was going to be treated because of my insurance. I didn't know what type of place it would be. But it was beautiful.

"I am on state insurance. I was given a list of doctors and told to call around. I called and called, getting every answer but yes, we'll care for you. I couldn't find a doctor that would take my insurance. Finally, I ended up in the emergency room. It was there they told me to go to Sixteenth Street Community Health Centers and helped me make an appointment. I've been at Sixteenth Street ever since.

At first I was afraid. I didn't know how I was going to be treated because of my insurance. I didn't know what type of place it would be. But it was beautiful. The staff was nice, attentive and listened to your concerns. My first doctor was caring and patient, she explained everything to me step-by-step. I felt reassured and taken care of. Then my doctor left and my nerves returned. I remember a sweet MA telling me, "Don't worry. Everyone here will take great care of you." She was absolutely right..."

Special Breastfeeding Series!

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends to exclusively breastfeed your baby for the first 6 months and continue breastfeeding 12 months or beyond.
Why? The more breast milk your baby receives, the more you decrease the baby's risk for ear infections, respiratory illnesses, allergies, asthma and obesity. Breastfeeding also decreases mom's risk of developing type 2 diabetes, heart disease and breast and ovarian cancers.
How can moms and babies reach these goals?  There are many ways to help make breastfeeding more successful....CONTINUE READING

Happy World Breastfeeding Month!  As a registered dietitian and certified lactation specialist, breastfeeding is my favorite topic.  Giving nutrition advice for babies is so easy, breastmilk!  Just give the baby its mother's milk and you can be sure that tiny person is getting the best nutrition possible.  Nutrition that is tailored to that specific baby and his or her changing needs.  It's nothing short of amazing.

While most expecting mothers know that breastmilk is the healthiest option for their baby, it's not always the choice that's made...CONTINUE READING
