Come Celebrate our 1st 40 Years! 
Registration is now open for The Masonry Society's 2017 Annual Meeting and 40th Anniversary celebration, which will be held in beautiful La Jolla, California on November 3-7. The meetings will feature committee meetings, technical sessions, and plenty of social activities.

Come celebrate our ruby anniversary with us where we'll share highlights and stories from our 40 years as a Society while looking ahead to the future. Click here to register for the meetings, or click here for additional information on the meetings.

An informal Arrival Day event will be held the evening of Nov. 2 for those arriving in La Jolla the night before our meetings begin, and we'll have a new "Young Member and Young At Heart" get together following the Member/Guest Reception.

A magical evening cruise of San Diego Bay has also been planned on a spacious yacht. Plan to join your TMS friends under the full moon for dinner, and if you so desire, dancing. Many other events are planned as noted here.

Advertise in TMS Commemorative Annual Meeting Program
As part of the celebration, we are compiling a special, commemorative edition of the Awards Program. The expanded program will include information on the Society, Award winners, Donors, and our Members. TMS is accepting advertisements, commemorations, and tributes for publication in this very special program. Click here for information on placing an ad, or sending a commemoration in this Commemorative Program. Ads are needed by September 15, 2017. Sustaining Members of the Society, and Diamond, Platinum and Gold Level Sponsors of the Meetings ( click here for sponsorship information) are entitled to complimentary advertisements.

By advertising in the TMS Commemorative Awards Program, you are promoting your organization and your services to leading masonry designers, and masonry construction and evaluation specialists. Your ad and/or tribute will be part of the Program, and will be recognized both during the meeting and on the TMS website. Your ad will assist TMS in covering the cost of this Commemorative Program
 
Professor's Workshop Scheduled at University of South Florida on March 11-13
The Masonry Society, with the support of the Masonry Association of Florida, the Florida Concrete and Products Association, the Brick Industry Association, the International Masonry Institute, the National Concrete Masonry Association, the Portland Cement Association, and other organizations, is planning a 2018 University Professors Masonry Workshop (UPMW) to be held at the University of South Florida in beautiful Tampa, Florida on March 11-13. Dr. Rajan Sen who is a Professor and Jefferson Science Fellow at USF will serve as the workshop host.

The UPMW is designed to assist professors and faculty at universities and colleges with creating or offering masonry courses so that students will be positively exposed to masonry and feel more comfortable with it when used on their projects. Educational sessions on masonry design, detailing and construction will be presented, panel discussions on a number of topics are planned, and a hands-on masonry laying activity will be offered. Additional details on the program will be posted here as they become available later this fall.   
Webinar Series Starts on October 12th with Presentation on Strength Design 
The Masonry Society (TMS) "2nd Thursday of the month" webinar series starts on October 12, 2017 with an excellent program on the Strength Design of Masonry Structures. Topics and speakers are shown below. Click the links below for additional information on these webinars or to register. Each webinar will provided 1 hour of AIA Learning Units and most qualify as HSW LU's.

Masonry Testing Program & Certifications offered in Chicago in November
 With the support of Nelson Testing Laboratories, the Illinois Chapter of ACI, and the Portland Cement Association, The Masonry Society is offering educational sessions on masonry field and lab testing, followed by the ACI Certification Examinations as follows:
  • Masonry Field Testing
    • November 28 - Review Session
    • November 29 - Certification Examination
  • Masonry Laboratory Testing
    • November 30 - Review Session
    • December 1 - Certification Examination

Special Inspection Seminar planned prior to TMS Annual Meeting in La Jolla on November 2nd 
The Masonry Society (TMS) with the support of the Concrete Masonry Association of California and Nevada (CMACN), and the Masonry Institute of America (MIA) is offerrig a comprehensive course aimed at helping inspectors, testing technicians, engineers, and building officials identify and verify key quality assurance items on the jobsite.

Attendees will learn code inspection requirements, proper placement of materials, mortar and grout, how to determine the compressive strength of masonry and appropriate severe weather procedures. This is an excellent course for those preparing for the ICC/TMS Structural Masonry Special Inspectors Certification Examination or to accumulate ICC Preferred Provider CEU's for renewal certification.

TMS to Present at 2018 Structures Congress and Host Booth
The Masonry Society (TMS) will be hosting a booth, and offering a number technical presentation at the 2018 SEI Structures Congress that will be held in Fort Worth, Texas from April 19-21, 2018. Public Comment Period on TMS 403
Comments Accepted Until September 10, 2017 
The Masonry Society's (TMS) Design Practices Committee has incorporated numerous revisions to the Direct Design Handbook for Masonry Structures (TMS 403) from its previous version published in 2013. As part of the review and approval process, TMS 403 is available for public review and comment. To view the draft standard and to submit comments, click here. Comments may be submitted until September 10, 2017 using the form at the link above.

James Mwangi of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo has been named a Simpson Strong-Tie Engineering Excellence Fellow and he will be working with Build Change in Indonesia, Colombia and perhaps the Philippines, Nepal and Haiti on masonry projects during the next year while he is on sabbatical.

Camarata Masonry Systems recently was awarded the "Coverings Installation & Design (CID) Award from the Marble Institute of America and the Building Stone Institute (MIA-BSI) for their work on the Energy Center III in Houston Texas for outstanding design and installation of tile and stone.
