January 13, 2017
Dear Colleague,

There is a great deal of uncertainty and trepidation around the world. The fate of programs and policies that have improved people's lives is in question. In this environment academia has a vital role to promote initiatives that will improve people's well-being and oppose those that will cause harm.  We know that silence and inaction can allow destructive policies to spread.

In this bulletin are two advocacy letters. One is in support of continued investments in global health and the other calls for supporting and improving, not repealing, the Affordable Care Act in the United States. These letters speak to investments that have been shown to save lives. Please support these letters and share them with your networks and the general public.

You will also see in this bulletin information about our upcoming Global Health conference, 'Healthy People, Healthy Ecosystems,' April 7-9.  Please attend the outstanding satellite sessions we will hold on Apr 6. Information about the conference speakers and topics are on our website. Register before Feb 14 to take advantage of our lowest, early bird rates.

Lastly, you will see the winners of CUGH's annual Leadership Awards. Each one of these individuals were chosen by their peers for their leadership and outstanding work in global health. We congratulate them on receiving this recognition and look forward to seeing them at our conference.

To increase the impact of the efforts in this bulletin please share it widely.

Best wishes,

Keith Martin MD, PC

Your Opportunity to Contribute to The Lancet-Global Commission on Pollution + Health Report!
The Lancet is publishing a landmark report by the Global Commission on Pollution + Health this spring on pollution, the leading cause of death and disability in the world. It is responsible for taking 10 million lives every year, primarily in low and middle-income countries. This figure is still an underestimation. To showcase this challenge and fill in gaps in the data, the Commission is inviting people affected by pollution, especially those living in low and middle-income countries, to submit photos and stories describing its effects in their communities. A crowd-sourced collection of stories, images and captions will help transform the data in the Commission report, showing how human life is harmed by pollution. National Geographic is collaborating with us through their "Your Shot Hashtag Challenge."
