Danger
by
Rev. Jay Sidebotham

Apparently, my loved ones think I need to do more reading. At Christmas, I received a slew of wonderful looking books that now stack up on my bedside table like planes over LaGuardia Airport in fog, circling for a landing. The stack is in itself impressive.

I've dived into a couple of them, including The Book of Joy, which describes conversations between Desmond Tutu and the Dalai Lama. The book is an exploration of joy, notable since both these men have faced extraordinary hardship and hatred. Each man, in his own way, seems to rise above it all with joyful spirit. How does that happen?

Yale study finds that gun violence is a 'contagious' social epidemic

By Bess Connolly Martell

Gun violence is often described as an epidemic or a public health concern, due to its alarmingly high levels in certain populations in the United States. It most often occurs within socially and economically disadvantaged minority urban communities, where rates of gun violence far exceed the national average. A new Yale study has established a model to predict how "contagious" the epidemic really is.

Quest Begins this Sunday!

January 15

Who should participate in Quest?

Quest is for adults who wish to be baptized, confirmed, or welcomed into the Episcopal Church from other Christian traditions. Quest is a great class for those who want to go deeper in their own spiritual formation. Quest is also recommended for adults who may have experienced significant life changes such as marriage, the birth of a child, career changes, a move, or the death of a spouse.

Weekly gatherings will occur on Sundays just after the 10 am service for approximately 90 minutes. Our time together will include a light lunch, teaching by the clergy of the cathedral, and plenty of time for you to ask your own questions. Regular attendance is important but don't hesitate to sign up even if you know you will miss a couple of sessions. The clergy will be happy to help you get up to speed for the next class.

Baptisms for adults will occur at the Easter Vigil, Saturday evening April 15th. Confirmations, reception to the Episcopal Church and reaffirmation of faith will occur at the Bishop's visitation on Sunday, June 4th.
Contact Kathy Noe if you would like to participate in Quest classes.

A Message from the Wardens

At its January meeting, the Vestry approved a resolution designating the Cathedral as a "sanctuary congregation" in the Cincinnati area, joining with other houses of worship across the city to provide a place of shelter and support.  The concept of sanctuary congregations has been in existence for thousands of years and is a manifestation of our own Christian tradition and mission.  Recently, a coalition of Cincinnati faith communities has been working to establish sanctuary and supporting congregations to provide shelter and care for families who are threatened because of their religion or status as immigrants.  By making this resolution, the Vestry has taken the initial step toward offering the Cathedral as a sanctuary.  The coalition continues its work, and the Vestry will carefully discern the circumstances under which the Cathedral will play a role, especially as it relates to sheltering individuals.  Certainly, questions of safety and legality are paramount to the Vestry's continuing consideration.  Do not hesitate to approach any member of the Vestry with questions, and, if you are interesting in volunteering in these efforts, please contact Elizabeth Brown.

AMOS  Leadership Assembly

January 19 & 21

As 2017 begins, AMOS believes now is the time to enter into a season of listening. At AMOS' January Leadership Assembly, participants will be trained in how to host and facilitate community conversations in our congregations and neighborhoods so our justice
agenda is firmly rooted in the dreams and struggles of our people.

In the Hebrew Scriptures, Ecclesiastes 3 begins with these words: "For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven." At AMOS, we believe that 2017 should begin with a time of knitting together relationships and hearts, and as a time to keep silence by listening to the hearts and hurts of our neighbors. We invite you to join us for this season of listening and knitting lives together by joining our January Leadership Assembly. We will prepare you to facilitate community conversations that will help set our agenda for 2017 and 2018. All identical sessions will be at Crossroads Church, 3500 Madison Road, and will run on Thursday, January 19 from 1-3 pm and 6:30-8:30 pm, and again on Saturday January 21 from 10 am- Noon. Please RSVP today by going here

You Are Cordially Invited
January 22

There was a time when Sunday morning weddings were normal in the life of the church. As a sacrament, marriage was considered part of the worship life of the church community. The cathedral has an opportunity to experience this older tradition when, on January 22 , cathedral member and chorister Amanda Carmen Bower weds Christian Philip Pursell, in a ceremony to take place during the 10:00 am worship service. The couple  cordially invites cathedral members and friends to attend their wedding at Christ Church Cathedral.  Please plan to attend and share in their joy!
