This week, fire service labor and management took off their badges and took up a pressing challenge for the profession: the emotional and mental wellness of the men and women on the front lines.
They finished with a unified commitment to deal with a common threat that is claiming the lives of our brothers and sisters.

At an unprecedented two-day  Behavioral Health Conference, more than 250 chiefs, union leaders and mental health experts gathered to consider ways to address the increase in suicide among firefighters and the rapidly emerging risks of post-traumatic stress injuries among first responders.   READ FULL STORY

CALIFORNIA STATE FIREFIGHTERS GAIN 11 TO 18 PERCENT RAISES IN PROPOSED CONTRACT

State firefighters got an early Christmas present with the news that their union reached a tentative agreement with the California Department of Forestry and Fire Protection, known as Cal Fire, for a four-year contract offering raises in a range of 11 to 18 percent.

The announcement follows a  campaign the union launched during last summer's fire season that drew attention to a  growing gap between the salaries its members earn and the wages paid by local governments for comparable work. A 2014 survey showed they earn 33 percent less in total compensation than their counterparts in other California fire departments.   READ FULL STORY

CalPERS Benefits Education Events in Carlsbad

January 27-28 Events at the Sheraton Hotel

The California Public Employees' Retirement System (CalPERS) is hosting CalPERS Benefits Education Events (CBEEs) in Carlsbad during January to inform members in a four-county area about programs and benefits available to them. These events will take place at the Sheraton Hotel on Friday, January 27, and Saturday, January 28, 2017.

There are more than 155,000 active members in Imperial, Orange, Riverside, and San Diego counties who can benefit from these events. Whether new to CalPERS, in mid-career, or close to retirement, CBEEs offer all CalPERS members a wealth of information about their retirement and health benefits, supplemental savings plans, long-term care coverage, and more. Representatives from CalPERS Regional Offices will be on hand to answer questions.
