Hannah Marley with a Broadcom MASTERS Certificate and First Place Medal
from the 2016 Intel International Science and Engineering Fair

Hannah Marley Receives Top Award in RI Intel International Science and Engineering Fair

Congratulations to Hannah Marley, who won a First Place award in the Rhode Island Intel International Science and Engineering Fair (Intel ISEF), which took place on 2-3 April 2016 at the Community College of Rhode Island in Warwick.

The Intel ISEF is a program sponsored by the Society for Science & the Public (SSP); it is the world's largest international pre-college science competition.

Hannah competed in the Junior Division, and received an award in the Plants Sciences category. Projects in this category explore plant structure, classification, pathology, genetics, physiology, and development. They also address topics in ecology, plant breeding, cultivation, systematics and evolution. Hannah's award ranked her among the top ten students in the Junior Division.

Hannah has been nominated to participate in the Broadcom MASTERS (Math, Applied Science, Technology and Engineering Rising Stars), the premier science and engineering competition for middle school students. SSP affiliated science fairs around the country nominate the top 10% of 6th, 7th and 8th grade participants to enter this prestigious competition. After submitting the online application, 300 semifinalists are selected and 30 finalists present their research projects. They compete in hands-on STEM activities to demonstrate their skill in critical thinking, collaboration, communication and creativity. Hannah's on-line application is due on 15 June, and finalists for the 2016 Broadcom MASTERS fair will be announced on 20 September.

Hannah first enrolled at Cluny School as a pre-kindergarten student. She and several eighth grade classmates have been together since that time. On 14 June, Hannah will graduate from Cluny School and attend Tiverton High School. When asked what she will take from her time at Cluny, Hannah explains, "I will always remember the kindness at Cluny and that everyone is happy."

Hannah has certainly shared her happiness with others. She organized a band-aid drive for Hasbro Children's Hospital in partnership with the Tomorrow Fund.

Cluny School wishes Hannah continued success and happiness for the future.

Special thanks to Jenny Henderson, science and math teacher, for providing information for this article.

The Lunar and Meteorite Disk Program
Landed at Cluny School on Moonrock Day!

Moonrock Day was out of this world! On Wednesday, 20 April, a NASA certified educator transported to Cluny School six samples of Lunar and Meteorite material encapsulated in two six-inch in diameter clear lucite disks. The program was organized and hosted by third grade teacher, Mrs. Burgess and her students, who beautified the multi-purpose room with stands of white lights, posters and armatures of the solar system.

The Lunar sample disk (pictured above) included the following types of material:
  • Basalt: Solidified lava found in the dark lowland mare or "seas".
  • Breccia: Rocks made of fragments of other rocks that were broken and welded during collisions between the Moon and meteorites.
  • Highland Soil: Fragments composing this soil are from the breakup of highlands rocks by meteorites.
  • Anorthosite: White rock consisting of feldspar crystals. Predominate rock of the lunar highlands.
  • Mare Soil: Most of these grains were produced by meteorites hitting lunar basalt.
  • Orange Soil: Volcanic ash from a lunar eruption 3.5 billion years ago. Recovered by Apollo 17 astronauts.

The Meteorite sample disk included the following types of materials:

  • ALH90411     Find location: Allan Hills, Antarctica ( chondrite L3)
  • LEW87030     Find location: Lewis Cliff, Antarctica (chondrite H5)
  • Allende         Find location: Allende, Mexico (carbonaceous chondrite)
  • EET83227     Find location: Elephant Moraine, Antar. (basaltic achondrite)
  • Gibeon         Find location: Namibia, Africa (iron - octahedrite)
  • Brenham       Find location: Kansas, USA (stony-iron - pallasite)

Prayer for Courage

Dear God, in this time of trouble I turn to You first, and immediately, for courage.
Bless my mind to think clearly. Bless my heart to know your hope.
Bless my face and my words to bring calm to others.
Bless my soul to trust that I am capable of facing this,
and every challenge of my life,
with the power of faith and courage. Amen.

National Shrine of St. Jude, Claretian Missionaries, Chicago, IL

Be strong and courageous... Do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God
will be with you wherever you go.
