Learning something new is the theme of my articles this week. For example, with the up-coming release of macOS High Sierra and iOS 11, Apple will finally be supporting H.265. This new codec promises big changes. My lead article this week describes what this is, what it means and what we need to do now to get ready.

Each time I do an " Ask Larry Anything" webinar, I am confronted with how much I don't know. Now, to some, this could be depressing. For me, it inspires me to do some research and learn more.

For example, for years, the go-to app to convert video stored on DVDs into something we can edit was MPEG Streamclip; except it no longer works on macOS 10.12 or later. This week, I have a video illustrating new software for converting DVD video that works; and works better.

Or, creating closed captions has always been slow, painful and expensive. This week, I have a video showing a captioning solution that gets you up and running in less than an hour; including creating the captions themselves.

Or, a quick media management tip that illustrates how to see the media you've used, or NOT used, in your current Final Cut Pro X project.

Finally, as part of last week's webinar, Hasan brought up a really good question asking how to deal with the increasing competition we are seeing for video editing. This allowed me to focus on something I tell my students that I want to share with you this week: " How to Succeed When There Is So Much Competition."

Thinking of sharing reminds me that last week's Digital Production Buzz looked at a variety of subjects, all revolving around security. I was especially struck by the technology that Fortium has developed to keep our files secure as they move from place to place. Affordable, fast and easy to use, the interview with Mathew Gilliat-Smith is one you need to listen to if you need to protect your files.

School starts this week for me, so I'm taking this Wednesday off from webinars to finish getting ready for my classes.
