STEM Education Questions for Betsy DeVos
The U.S. Senate is scheduled to begin the confirmation hearing for Betsy DeVos next week. Mrs. DeVos was nominated by President-Elect Donald Trump for Secretary of Education. The STEM Education Coalition hopes senators will raise the following questions with Mrs. DeVos:

The new roster for the Senate education committee is set for the 115th Congress. There isn't a huge amount of turnover, but there are two newly elected senators who will join the committee, and a senator who's newly prominent thanks to the 2016 race.

Annual Report Card Ranks Quality of States' Education Systems, ESSA Readiness
Education World
Called its "longest-running" annual report, Education Week has released the results of its 2017 edition of Quality Counts, a comprehensive look into the current state of education on a state-by-state basis.
In addition to ranking the quality of education in every state and on a national level, the report took a look at how ready states are for the impending implementation of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA).

Jenny Chen needed to solve a problem in the pool. A competitive swimmer since age five, Jenny found that now at age 13, she was struggling to improve and surpass her teammates. "The plateau hit me like a freight train and caused doubt to obscure the path to my goals. I began to fear diving into a race instead of relishing it, and everything that used to ignite a fire in me began to work against me." Jenny's search for a solution to her swimming goals lead her to a new love- statistics. She was not a stranger to statistics as her father is a longtime American Statistical Association (ASA) member, but statistics was not her favorite subject.

Webinar Series: Non-Regulatory GuidanceStudent Support and Academic Enrichment Grants Title IV, Part A of the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) 
The Office of Safe and Healthy Students invites you to participate in a series of webinars on the U.S. Department of Education's recently issued " Non-Regulatory Guidance on the Student Support and Academic Enrichment (SSAE) Grants" (the Guidance). The SSAE program aims to increase the capacity of State educational agencies, local educational agencies, schools, and local communities to provide all students with access to a well-rounded education; improve school conditions for student learning; and improve the effective use of technology in order to improve the academic achievement and digital literacy of all students. 
 
Tiger Woods Foundation and Discovery Education Launch Digital Programs in College Prep and STEM Careers 
If students had the most innovative tools to help them see the future, what would they see? The Tiger Woods Foundation (TWF), TGR's philanthropic arm, joined with Discovery Education, the leading provider of digital content and professional development for K-12 classrooms, to launch "TGR EDU: Explore," an initiative for middle and high school students that helps navigate the college exploration process and introduces them to high-quality STEM-focused career paths for today's jobs, and the ones that don't exist yet.

ASA Board of Directors Approve, Endorse New Undergraduate Data Science Degree Guidelines At its quarterly meeting last month, the ASA Board of Directors endorsed curriculum guidelines for undergraduate degrees in data science. The guidelines were recently developed at the Park City Mathematics Institute (PCMI), a three-week intensive workshop in which 25 undergraduate faculty-including computer scientists and mathematicians from a variety of liberal arts colleges and research universities-met to discuss a vision for data science in the undergraduate context, propose necessary activities and skills in such programs, and address implementation strategies.
