How will you celebrate the New Year? Many traditions are believed to bring good luck in the new year, like eating black-eyed peas on New Years Day for economic prosperity. Some other traditions include a kiss at midnight to ensure that your upcoming year is not a lonely one.
Nearly all New Years celebrations include fireworks which came to us from China, the inventors of fireworks. It is believed that the loud noise scares off evil spirits and misfortune.
In the United States, the ball drop at Times Square is a big part of the New Year celebration whether you're there to see it or watching it on television. The first ball dropping ceremony at Times Square was on December 31, 1907.
And what New Year celebration would be complete without singing "Auld Lang Syne" at midnight? The song was written by 18th century Scottish poet Robert Burns and literally means "old long ago".
However you choose to celebrate, please keep safety in mind and have a wonderful New Year!

Small Fruit Sale
Starts January 3rd
Our annual Small Fruit Plant Sale begins January 3rd. An assortment of small fruit plants and fruit trees will be available for purchase as well as flowering Dogwood trees and Patio Apple trees. Orders are taken throughout the months of January and February and the plants will be available for pickup on March 15 & 16, 2017. Burke County Beekeepers

The Burke County Beekeepers Association (BCBA) meets monthly at the Burke County Agricultural Building located at 130 Ammons Drive in Morganton. There is a featured speaker each month and the public is invited to attend. The BCBA is a chapter of the North Carolina State Beekeepers Association.

Project Books - Awards
January 6th is the due date for ALL 4-H Project Record Books, 4-H Portfolios, 4-H Club Scrapbooks and 4-H Award packets. This is a great way for 4-H'ers to showcase their hard work they completed during 2016. There is still time to get these completed. If you would like to nominate a 4-H'er and/or Leader for their hard work, fill out the appropriate page of the awards packet. 4-H staff can help with these and any questions you may have regarding items due

4-H Jr. Beekeeping Project
If you are interested in participating in the 4-H Jr. Bee Keeping Project, please contact Nicki Steer. Youth will have the opportunity to gain Bee knowledge, build a hive and receive their own bees to care for. The commitment to participate requires a parent/guardian to attend Bee School, actively participate in hive construction and youth are required to submit a 4-H project Record book at the end of the year. This program will kick off in March. Bee School dates have been set for
March 4 and March 11 with a weather alternate date of
March 18.
Horse Bowl & Hippology
Burke County 4-H'ers and Leaders have already began diving into practice for the upcoming contests for Hippology and Horse Bowl. If you are interested in seeing what this is all about, contact Nicki Steer. We will keep you updated on Burke County teams' progress. State competition is

4-H County Council
Burke County 4-H County Council will meet on January 10, in Room B of the Agricultural Building at 6pm. The council will share past event updates and provide upcoming information. Burke County 4-H County Council will also begin assisting in the planning of 4-H Achievement Night, which is scheduled for Sat. Feb.11. (This is an award gathering to spotlight 4-H'ers, Leaders and Clubs for all that they do). For more information on 4-H County Council or 4-H Achievement Night, please call our office.

Last Call For Master Gardener Class
The 2017 class will start on Wednesday, January 18th and continue on Wednesday mornings through mid-April.
This class is for anyone who has a desire to learn about gardening. There will be hands-on activities as well as classroom work.
Cost of the class is $100 and we are accepting applications now. You can call our office at 828-764-9480 if you have questions. Deadline for applications is Tuesday, January 3, 2017.

Foothills Greenhouse Production Workshop

The Foothills Greenhouse Production Workshop is designed to provide updated information regarding greenhouse production, including scouting, pest identification and control, and nutrient management.
The workshop will be held at Banner Greenhouses in Nebo. Cost of the workshop is $25 if paid by January 25th. If paid after January 25th, the cost is $30. 3 hours of pesticide credit (L,N,D, X) will be included but participants must attend all sessions to receive the credits.

Commercial Poultry Grower Meetings
Cooperative Extension is offering Commercial Poultry Grower meetings across the state this winter. The meetings will provide up to date information on Waste Management Plans and record keeping, Emergency Action Plans, AI response, and Cost Share programs. The agenda should cover all the aspects that the NC Poultry Federation recommended that growers receive training on during 2017. Re-Think Your Drink
Staying properly hydrated is very important, but "drinking your calories" can lead to excessive weight gain. "Hidden" calories in beverages can come from fat, sugar, or alcohol. For example, a 12 ounce cola contains about 136 calories and a 16 ounce cafe' latte made with whole milk is 265 calories. Re-think your drink and make smart beverage choices to stay hydrated and healthy!
