Galette des rois
Pictured: Gisèle, Pénélope, Liam, Eva, Stella (PK1B)

Every school year, the Preschool and Kindergarten students celebrate "La fête des rois" which takes place the first week of the New Year.

All of our students have or will prepare the traditional cake, "La galette", which consists of a puff pastry filled with a mix of eggs, sugar, butter and almond powder.
Some may add apple slices or orange blossom extract.

During the week, the children prepared nice crowns while the bakers usually add one "fève" (the bean of kings) inside the pastry. The lucky person who will get the slice with the "fève" in it will be crowned queen or king of the celebration.

Celebrating El Dia De Reyes
On December 6th, 2017, Middle School students and 5th graders shared a delicious "Rosca de reyes" in the Middle School Lounge area, thanks to Patricia Soto, Teresa Sekiguchi and Yuriko Patino !

Flags: New
 location
A few parents asked why the flags have been moved to a new location, near the school sign. Many commented that they are more visible and add a nice touch to the building by the SDFAS sign. The reason for the change is that, according to flags regulation, flags from two countries should not be displayed on the same pole nor one below the other. To comply with that rule, and since adding a pole next to the existing one will take time and money, we decided to place them on the building side by side.

The video journalism Elective visited the KPBS studios
Les élèves de l'option vidéo-journalisme au collège en visite aux studios KPBS

The Video Journalism Elective students and their teacher, Ms. Caudron, visited the KPBS TV studios last December 13, 2016. During their visit, they learnt how to create and produce a TV news broadcast. In particular, how to select the news; identify the "news of the day"; and what "effects" the news broadcast will include.
They especially enjoyed the newsroom and the TV studios. Finally, they discovered the radio studios.

Thanks to KPBS and their news cast hosts, all this knowledge will be put to good use for their next San Diego French American School News broadcast!
Winter Show 2016 was amazing!

Le spectacle d'hiver 2016 était fantastique !

On December 16, students presented the Winter Show in the auditorium. This year, the theme was the "Four Elements" for Preschool and Elementary. Our Preschoolers and Kindergartners performed various dances, songs and movements on stage to express the four elements. Thanks to some parents and volunteers, the costumes were absolutely beautiful! Great news, all parents will have the joy to watch it again by using our new "Vimeo" access.
1st and 3rd grade played drums and sang Brazilian traditional songs learnt during the first term with Stefanie.
2rd graders presented the rhythms and dance South Africa, learned with Nomsa. 4th and 5th graders performed the plays they had prepared with their theater teacher Meara and Susan. Truly a great show with multi-talented students!

ÉDITO

The year 2017 starts with a very exciting project for our school. We enter the CAIS-WASC accreditation process. SDFAS has been recognized for many years as one of the finest school in San Diego for its unique bilingual program. Six (6) years ago, we obtained the prestigious combined accreditation from California Independent Schools association and WASC*. Our term comes to an end and in the Spring 2018, the school will be visited by a team of expert from peer schools to renew our accreditation. The time has come to do our internal audit and/or self-study and prepare the report that will be completed in the Fall of this year. This is an opportunity to involve everyone, administrators, teachers, students, parents, board members to reflect on what we do best, to re-visit our program, take surveys, debate and envision SDFAS goals for the next seven years, the new term of accreditation we hope to receive!
Expect to be at some time consulted and asked to share your dreams about the future of our school.
Do not miss the first community event of the year, on Friday January 27 at 8:30 am: share an early morning "café et croissants" and celebrate the school's achievements, reflect on the school challenges and opportunities!

Chers parents,

Do you love experimenting or testing your ideas about scientific phenomena? Turn that into a science fair project and share what you learn with our community. Find a topic that interests you and that you are curious about. Develop a testable question. Create an experiment and repeat it multiple times. Collect your results. Present all your findings on a display board. Bring the project to the auditorium on Monday, January 23, 2017. If you have questions or would like to see an example of a completed project, contact  Echo Jacoway  or  Anne-Laure Denis .
Oral Album

Pictured: Charlotte and Isabella

We would like to share with you a tool to help students progress with their French oral skills.  The "Oral Album"  is one of the favorite tool our French teachers use with their students in order to help them improve their oral vocabulary and language.
It comes in many albums created to teach the students on how to strengthen their oral and improve their speech skills. The stories are told by the teacher and not read as it would be with a normal book to the children.

The main goal is for the students to get fully familiar with the language used in the story by listening to the Audio CD. The CD comes with the album, they can listen to it as often as they wish and individually.

At the end, all students are invited to re-tell the story using their own words, usually now greatly enriched by the appropriation of the new vocabulary and sentences used in the story told.
Those albums offer different levels of oral skills (PK1, PK2 and Kindergarten levels).
Middle School and Elementary students working together in mathematics
Les élèves du collège et de l'élémentaire font des maths ensemble

Right before Winter break, 6 th graders and 3 rd graders worked together in mathematics, under the supervision of M. Giot (MS Math teacher) and M. Franquet (3 rd grade teacher). The 6 th graders were challenged to design math problems for their younger peers, then to supervise and help them out in resolving these problems.

They abided to the following guidelines:
  • Design a selection of math problems using only additions and substractions. There were 4 levels of complexities (green, blue, red and black).
  • Prepare the correction and teaching approach to guide to solution.
  • Work in small groups with the 3rd graders, helping them to solve the problem.
On December 15th, 2016, the 6th graders joined M. Franquet's class for one hour. Students were placed in small groups and under the care of their two 6th grade leaders while the 3 rd graders were at work. Collaborative skills and joyful learning spirit were put to good use and in one hour all problems were duly solved!

The 6 th graders were truly impressed by the 3 rd  graders' work and shared their experiences:

"It was very interesting to gain awareness of how we were at the very same age" Lily

"When you use 3 rd grade math techniques, it is actually harder than 6 th grade techniques, and it takes longer!". Sofia

"We know the answer, but... we cannot tell it! We have to find different ways to explain the problem solving process". Matthew

"Being a teacher is quite hard: you need to be patient, repeat and avoid giving the answer so they find it by themselves". Amaia

"We really had to adapt ourselves to their learning ways and comprehension. I used pens to decipher numbers when I saw they did not understand. It made things simpler to explain". Saliha
