New Jersey Coach Connect

From the ICF-NJ President

Dear ICF-NJ Members,

I hope this note finds you feeling well and enjoying your summer.

My family and I have been having a wonderful summer - spending time with family and friends, trips to the beach and an amazing trip to Costa Rica. During one of our trips with our extended family, I had the opportunity to spend time with my nieces, nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews. It was fun, non-stop and peaceful all at the same time.

One of my most enjoyable moments was walking on the beach with my "grands," ages five-to-seven. As we picked seashells, I listened to their chatter and answered questions such as "Where did these shells come from?" "Why are some smaller than others?" "That crab is stuck on his back Aunt Renee,  what do we do?" As we gave him back to the sea, they cheered and wished him well.

Needless to say, I found myself searching for the perfect shell and hoping for a conch or starfish. As I watched, the kids were delighted to walk, talk and pick the shells that most caught their eyes (typically broken shells, stones, and even some seaweed).

I thought to myself, "How wonderful it is to be young, curious, without expectations, and oblivious to perfection." They were simply delighted with the present moment, the wonder of the shells, their stories and to hold them precious in their little hands.

As coaches, isn't this what we do? Be fully present for our clients, listen without judgment, and never expect perfection? We support them on their journey as they achieve whatever they are in search of, whether it's a broken shell or a starfish. We're there holding their vision, even when they may not be able to see it for themselves.

I share this story with you as a reminder that for coaches, just like children, being curious is vital. However, it's not enough.

To grow as coaches, we must continually invest in ourselves. Being present, listening, and holding a vision are all critical skills accomplished coaches develop with training, practice and being coached.

Therefore, I encourage you to reflect on what you're doing for your professional growth. Please consider attending one of our monthly Zoom call-ins, webinars, an in-person event or perhaps volunteering for the Chapter. And if you're not or no longer an ICF-NJ member, please consider re-joining our ICF NJ community as part of your development journey.

To Your Coaching Success,

RenĂ©e Robertson
2017 ICF-NJ President

Top Greetings from the Education and
Programs Director

The Education and Programs Committee has been working behind the scenes to curate the in-person and webinars for the remainder of 2017. We're excited to announce some of the upcoming events covering rich and varied coaching topics, designed to take our coaching skills to the next level:
  • Somatic Coaching
  • Using the Framework of Intersectionality to better understand privilege: both for ourselves as coaches, as well as for our coachees who we serve.
  • 18 Disciplines to help you build a financially rewarding coaching practice.
Please be on the lookout announcements on speakers, dates and venues.

Call for Presenters for 2018

The ICF-NJ Education and Programs Committee seeks to identify programs and speakers for the 2018 calendar year. The events are held four to six times per year, and will be a mix of in-person presentations and webinars using the Zoom platform. We are particularly interested in presentations that advance the coaching profession and enhance the capabilities of our Chapter members.

To get CCEUs from the ICF we seek to incorporate relevant aspects of the  ICF Core Competencies  and the ICF Code of Ethics, as well as Resource Development to help our coaches in their practices.
Please access the Speaker Application here . We look forward to accessing your talents and passion around advancing the coaching profession in our community.

And please consider sharing this with one of your coaching community contacts who might bring our members value via a presentation.

Call for Volunteers for THE EPD Committee

We 're looking for volunteers to join our EPD committee , and in doing so, help raise the skills, talents, and professionalism of the ICF-NJ coach community. Please contact me at shefalisalwan@yahoo.com if you'd like to help us in curating the events.

Warm regards,

From Your Director of Communications!

Last month, we were proud to share the news that ICF-NJ had  made it the finalist round for the 2016 Chapter Awards. We were so excited when two members reached out to share their messages of support:

"This is great news!  Good job to you and the others who give of your time and effort to the leadership of the NJ Chapter!"
Ruth Roemer, Possibilities Unlimited

"Congratulations to you and the entire chapter leadership team, Renee - that's extraordinary news!!!  Congrats, again, and way to go!"
Supriya Desai, Desai Transformation

We very much want to make this your newsletter. Please contact me at
ken@jacobscomm.com if you're interested in writing an article for NJ Coach Connect, if you have good news to share with your fellow coaches such as a recent accreditation or publication, or if you have ideas about how we can build our ICF-NJ coach community!
