Bob Franco goes to work in Alaska

At the invitation of Capt. Marc Bayer, Tesoro's General Manager of Shipping Operations, and Marine Superintendent Jack Jensen, a reception was held at the Homer Deep Water Dock on November 12, to welcome the Bob Franco to Alaska. Among the representatives in attendance were representatives of the U.S. Coast Guard, Cook Inlet RCAC, Southwest Alaska Pilots Association, Harley Marine Services, the captain and crew. The new docking assist/rescue tug permanently relieved the Millennium Star earlier this month and has been hard at work in Alaska waters for the past several weeks. Read more.

Cook Inlet RCAC launches new initiative; demonstrates ice cameras
at Navigational Safety Committee pre-winter meeting

Cook Inlet RCAC's Executive Director announced our initiative to form a Cook Inlet Area Harbor Safety Committee, as recommended by the Cook Inlet Navigational Risk Assessment, at the Navigational Safety Committee's pre-winter meeting in Nikiski in October. Harbor Safety Committees are local committees that address issues that may include the safety, security, mobility, and environmental protection of a port or waterway. Membership is typically comprised of representatives of governmental agencies, maritime labor, industry organizations, and public interest groups. These members work closely together for the mutual benefit of all port users.  

 

The Ice Camera Network continues to grow, aid mariners

Cook Inlet RCAC's ice forecasting network of cameras continues to prove invaluable to the NOAA Ice Forecaster in her job of guiding mariners transiting throughout the inlet during the treacherous winter months. Originally conceived as a Network of Observers, the Cook Inlet RCAC's ice camera network now consists of 8 cameras--with more in the works--strategically located throughout the Inlet, which the Ice Forecaster can operate from her Anchorage headquarters. Cook Inlet RCAC provided an update on the most recent installation and demonstrated how the cameras work at the pre-winter meeting. Read more.
