PFEFFERNUSSE (SPICE NUTS)
This German Pfeffernusse cookie recipe is a traditional Christmas cookie in our family. The combination of spices make our home smell as good as these bite-sized cookies taste. This recipe was passed down through my mother from my German Grandmother, Marie Wilhelm.
1 cup sugar
1 cup shortening
2 eggs
4 Tbs anise seed
1/2 cup dark molasses
1/2 cup light corn syrup
1/3 cup water
1 tsp soda
6 - 2/3 cups flour
1 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp allspice
1/4 tsp cloves
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1 tsp ginger

Cream shortening and sugar thoroughly. Add anise seed and eggs. Combine syrup, molasses, water, and soda. Add to creamed mixture. Add flour sifted with spices. Chill. Roll on slightly floured board. Shape into long slender rolls about 1/2 inch in diameter. Cut into 1/4 to 1/3 inch pieces. Bake about 8 minutes in a 400°F oven.
