Program Highlight - Russian Major
Why study Russian? Classified by the U.S. Department of Defense as a Critical Language, students learning Russian have various opportunities to earn scholarships and fund their education and study abroad experiences. The flexibility of the
Russian major requirements allows students to double-major and graduate on time. Advanced Russian language skills and cultural proficiency effectively complement majors in international studies, political science, business, public affairs, engineering, and many others. Most importantly, with qualifications in Russian, one's career opportunities and lifelong earnings increase considerably. Russia is a new economic frontier and a growing political power, and excellent Russian language and society knowledge greatly aids in finding employment in the U.S. government or international business. Student Profile - Dan Gage
Dan Gage's major in biology and interest in the treatment of cancer led him to a laboratory where he was able to conduct related research. Through his research he studied pathways that allow for the growth of melanoma and worked with a compound that attempts to halt this growth. His research experience further developed his analytical skills that will benefit him as both a future medical student and as a practicing physician.

Summer is a great time to participate in an internship, volunteer, or partake in any other kind of resume-building experience. If you are looking for a summer opportunity to help build your resume you'll want to attend the

Summer Internship & Opportunity Fair
to meet with representatives from over 100 companies, government agencies and nonprofit organizations.
Attending a fair is important, as opposed to simply applying for a position online, because it allows you the opportunity to speak with recruiters and network with them directly. When you only apply online you're missing that very important step. When talking with the representatives, you will be regarded as a serious applicant if you give them a copy of your resume while describing why you think you are qualified for the position(s) they are seeking to fill. There will be a FREE photo booth at the fair where you can have a headshot taken, which can then be used on professional networking sites like LinkedIn or AlumniFire.

Student Organization Highlight - The Art of Living Club
The Art of Living Club is a diverse community of students that comes together to meditate and do service projects to uplift the campus. They teach de-stressing and rejuvenating tools which enhance physical and mental health. They also plan service projects which hone leadership skills and make a difference in society. While many students seek them out looking for relief to anxiety, depression and daily stresses and strains, others are just looking for a fun and supportive community. The club is a safe space where students can be themselves and simultaneously grow as a person while making a difference on campus. COMPAS Special Event - Author of Orange is the New Black
Piper Kerman is the author of the memoir
Orange is the New Black: My Year in a Women's Prison
from Spiegel & Grau. The book has been adapted by Jenji Kohan into an Emmy and Peabody Award-winning original series for Netflix. Bringing her message to Ohio State, Piper Kerman will speak about her own experiences in prison and shed light on the wide-ranging collateral damage - particularly on family stability, women, children and minorities - of America's criminal justice practices. Writing a Successful Abstract
Are you interested in presenting your research at a poster forum or conference? Attend one of two sessions below. Learn from a faculty member about strategies for writing a research abstract in any field and develop the skills to compose a strong abstract. There will also be a brief overview of the guidelines for applying to present your research at the annual Denman Undergraduate Research Forum. Dresden Summer Language Program
- Eight week language course and GE culture course offered in Dresden and based at the Technische Universitat Dresden. Provides beginning German language students with the opportunity to increase their language ability, study the recent history of Dresden and Saxony and experience contemporary German life and culture. Exploring Jamaican Arts and Culture - Focuses on the arts and cultural practices in schools, colleges, museums and cultural institutions in Jamaica. Mapping Our World - Southern Scandinavia - Combines online map making coursework with a two week immersive field-study experience at Lund University, Sweden. Financial support to study at the Hebrew University in Jerusalem is available through the Ellen E. and Victor J. Cohn Education Abroad Scholarship Fund for Study at Hebrew University. Preference is given to students attending Hebrew University for the entire academic year. More info.
Financial support to attend the summer program at the Vilnius Yiddish Summer Institute in Lithuania is available through the George and Emily Severinghaus Beck Fund for Study at Vilnius Yiddish Institute. More info.

Merit and need-based funding is available for currently enrolled students pursuing a major in the humanities and/or the natural and mathematical sciences. Funds will be applied toward 2017 - 2018 enrollment. For eligibility and the application,

Applications for Scholarships to Ohio State's Stone Lab Are Due Soon
Applications for the Research Experience for Undergraduates (REU) Scholarship Program at
Stone Laboratory, The Ohio State University's island campus on Lake Erie, are due February 6. REU students complete an independent research project with a faculty mentor while taking a five-week class. Those selected receive in-state tuition, lab fee and room and meals.
Stone Lab offers science courses suitable for students in any major. The
tuition reduction for summer term makes these classes an affordable way to earn credits.

Washington Academic Internship Program
Interested in studying and working in our nation's capital? The Washington Academic Internship Program (WAIP) selects outstanding undergraduates from any major to spend a semester in Washington, D.C. as John Glenn Fellows. Students are placed in internships that reflect their particular areas of academic interest.
An information session geared toward summer 2017 applicants will be held Thursday, January 12 at 5:30p.m. in Room, 130 (LEC), Page Hall. WAIP program staff and alumni will provide an overview and answer questions.

Science Sundays - Listening to the Universe with Gravitational Waves
Einstein predicted gravitational waves as ripples in space-time produced by violent astrophysical events. One hundred years later, the Laser Interferometer Gravitational-wave Observatory (LIGO) observed gravitational waves from the collision of two black holes. This groundbreaking discovery marks the beginning of a new astrophysics, providing new ways to probe the universe. Laura Cadonati, associate professor of physics and member of Georgia Tech's Center for Relativistic Astrophysics, researches gravitational waves and particle astrophysics. Science Sundays.

Arts Scholars Juried Exhibition
The annual Arts Scholars Juried Exhibition features works from undergraduate students from all years of study who share an interest in the arts, including music, visual arts, design, dance and theatre. Students major in a variety of areas including several non-arts subjects.

Health and Wellness - Wellness Coaching
Wellness coaching is a free service that provides opportunities for you to gain awareness regarding your capacity to create the life you want to live, both now and in the future. Wellness coaches take a positive approach to personal development, focusing on your strengths and using the 9 Dimensions of Wellness model as a framework for generating goals that are meaningful for you. Individual sessions last approximately 45 minutes and can be scheduled by emailing

'Follow Me' Printing Available
Students will be able to send print jobs to the cloud and release them at any participating Pay-to-Print location. "Follow Me" printing allows for increased flexibility by having your print job follow you wherever you go. This feature will be available initially in Thompson and 18th Avenue Libraries, with additional locations (other libraries, residence halls, etc.) to follow. Read more.
