2012 Silverado Mt George Merlot, Estate Grown
Yesterday we received a sample of the 2012 Silverado Mt George Estate Merlot. My, what a decadent red. There are violets on the nose which combine with ash ( volcanic soil ) and brambly spice. Michele's first comment when tasting the Silverado was " there are definitely blueberries here". There is a ton of blueberry on the front palate which darkens to boysenberry and finally blackberry. The finish is big dark berry flavors infused with smoke and cocoa. The 2012 Silverado Mt George Merlot is certainly a red meat wine which married wonderfully with the char and sirloin flavor of a big New York, but even without food I found myself going back to the bottle for another quick taste. This wine has wonderful complexity. When it comes down right down to it, there is little substitute for the right soil composition combined with climate and vine age. Mt George is legendary as a micro climate. Mt George is an ancient volcano. The soil composition of gravel and ancient volcanic ash combines with both warm days and cool nights. These vineyards were originally planted in 1865, meaning the soil has been naturally fertilized by the vines themselves for over a century.
