WCA ADVANCED CHOIR PERFORMED AT PHILIP S. MILLER PARK

PRINCIPAL LETTER

Happy New Year WCA Families and Friends!

I trust that you had the chance to spend some quality time together with friends and family either locally or out of town during our holiday break!

First, thanks to our WCA families who attended our Middle School Program Information Session! The newest proposal for our middle school, which will begin next school year with 5th grade, 6th grade, and 7th grade, will consist of the whole southwest wing of our school being set up as a stand-alone, block scheduled, elective based middle school program, with rotating classes and electives. Research indicates that by focusing our program with these student groups, we will be able to offer more quality educational programming options at developmentally appropriate levels. Additionally, we will be offering a true 1:1 tech model of differentiated and individualized learning through the use of Chromebooks for each student in the middle school, using the Google Classroom platform. For those interested, we will conduct additional informational sessions
each month through the end of the school year.
To view the middle school presentation, please click here.

On another note, this month's emphasis in our Cougar Essentials is KNOWLEDGE! Our January assembly featured a Kid President Pep Talk video that highlighted the importance of learning. Also, please check out our progress on our paper chain representing our WCA students' compassionate acts (i.e. random acts of kindness).

Don't forget to nominate two staff from WCA for the DCSD Apple Awards, which celebrates excellence in Education. The nomination window closes after Friday, January 13. We want to represent WCA well at the upcoming Apple Awards Ceremony at the end of the school year. One nomination needs to be for one of our awesome WCA teachers. Additionally, we need to also nominate another outstanding non-teacher from WCA who is making a big difference in the lives of our students!  Please nominate your favorite WCA teacher and staff here

And finally, as a part of our foundational principles, here's Ron Clark's "The Essential 55:" Rule #3 - Be a good sport! If someone in the class wins a game or does something well, we will congratulate that person. Claps should be at least three seconds in length with the full part of both hands meeting in a manner that will give the appropriate clap volume.

Mission:
WCA engages and inspires learners in a safe, challenging, and individualized learning environment that cultivates and fosters character, a lifelong love of learning, and the skills to engage in the global community.

Thanks for being a part of our great school family!

Working together for our students,

Lance Howard
WCA Principal

WCA ACADEMIC COMPETITIONS

January is an exciting month for WCA to celebrate knowledge and participate in academic competitions!

All of our students in grade 4-6 have been competing in the national Math Olympiads competition monthly since November. The cumulative leaderboard was just posted outside of Mrs. Parker and Mrs. Williams' doors. Congratulations to our top five students Caden E and Kerim S with their high cumulative scores of 7, as well as Aidan T, Ella T, and Ben H with their cumulative scores of 6. The third portion of the competition was completed in all fourth-sixth grade math classes. These tests have not yet been added to the cumulative scores, but will be updated and posted on the leaderboard shortly.

On  January 11, our top spellers as determined by both a written test and an in class spelling bee, competed in the first WCA School Level Scripps National Spelling Bee. All the students did a fantastic job spelling some challenging words! Our three runners up were Julius F, Logan W, and Jordan W. The winner of the spelling bee was Ben H, spelling the winning word of "uranium". Great job to all of our competitors! These students, as well as the individual classroom winners, will be celebrated at the assembly today.

Since returning from break, students in grades 4-6 have been completing the Geography Bee preliminary tests. The top 30 students based on this preliminary test will be competing in the school level National Geographic Geo-Bee on  Wednesday, January 18. Good luck to all of
our students!

If you have any questions about any of our competitions, please feel free to contact Kate Parker.

Congratulations, Ben H!
