Joseph Smith, Performing Artist of Living History
A Candid Conversation with Augustin Fresnel
August 20, Sunday, 2 PM. at the Custom House.
Joseph Smith, the recipient of a 2016 Staten Island Arts Fund Grant, will present an original living-history portrayal of
Augustin Fresnel,
left, 1788-1827, the French inventor of the Fresnel lens.
His Fresnel performance was the highlight of our 2017 Lighthouse Conference.
Based on his revolutionary theory of light behaving like a wave rather than as particles, Augustin developed the multiple glass prism shapes that made up a lens able to capture 85% of the light emitted by the light source, & project a light beam in a lighthouse over 25 miles.

This is a free presentation, in honor of National Lighthouse Day (August 7) presented by New London Maritime Society.

Local History - Book Talk, with Gail MacDonald
Morton F. Plant - Shaping the Connecticut Shoreline
Sunday, August 27, 4 PM, at the Custom House
Join Gail MacDonald for the launch of her new book and the first meeting of the Custom Book Club.
Gilded Age financier Morton F. Plant inherited his father's transportation empire determined to improve his community.
A dreamer eager to invest in innovative technology and grass-roots community causes alike, Plant's influence ran deep on the Connecticut shoreline prior to World War I, and his legacy remains prominent. Plant's summer mansion, Branford House, is one of southeastern Connecticut's iconic landmarks. He was instrumental in founding the prestigious Connecticut College. He developed the popular Shennecossett Golf Club as part of his summer resort.
Gail Braccidiferro MacDonald is an associate professor in residence in the journalism department at the University of Connecticut-Storrs. She is a former reporter for the Day of New London, and a veteran journalist whose work has been published in numerous newspapers and magazines, including the New York Times, the Hartford Courant, the Providence Journal, the Los Angeles Times, Rhode Island Monthly, American Artist, and Vermont Life.
Copies of the book are available in the Custom House MUSEUM SHOP.

Farrar Sails, in New London since 1999. Last Tuesday, for the August meeting of the Jibboom Club, Kevin gave us a tour and explained the process of designing and fabricating custom sails.
