Who Are You? Series: "Connect With Your Belovedness"

The beginning of a new calendar year is a time when we often reassess direction and ask questions yet again about who we are and where we are going in life. We make resolutions, we sign up at the gym (again), we vow to be better people. This year we will take a deep journey into the question, "Who Are You?" We will discover that "who we are" is indelibly linked to "Whose we are." This Sunday we remember our baptism and the voice of God which proclaims to all of us, "You are my beloved."

About 100 people came to the Village Sharing overview last Sunday. We learned about how you as a church moved from being inwardly focused to outwardly focused and from being served to serving. It has been an exciting eleven years since this journey began! This Sunday the Grapevine Village team will be sharing about our Ministry Mile, Grapevine Village and the collaborative strength of this community we call Grapevine. The next Women in Transition workshop begins Tuesday, January 17, with a new facilitator, Lisa Coburn. Times of transition (divorce, widowed, empty nest, retirement, job change) can be prime times to make some changes in our lives. The Women in Transition (WIT) program empowers you with tools, peer support, and group coaching with a spiritual basis. This is a 6 week course on Tuesday evenings from 6:30 PM- 8:45 PM in Room A of the former Senior Activity Center (421 Church Street). 01/20/2017 - Blankets of Hope Work Session
A work session for the Blankets of Hope Ministry will be held Friday, January 20, from 2-4 PM in Leach Hall. Blankets of Hope makes three or four deliveries of 70 blankets to Valley Hope each year in support of the residents there who are struggling with alcohol and drug addiction. Prepared fleece and the tools you'll need to complete blankets will be provided. Your contribution, whether sewing, cutting fringe and/or tying, will complete blankets for our next delivery. Volunteers live healthier, happier lives. Honestly! Unsure about what that could look like in your busy schedule? Let's talk! You'd be amazed how accommodating our "team concept" can be when we serve in ministry together here at FUMCG.
  • 8:15 Traditional Service, 10:30 Contemporary and 10:30 Traditional services need additional greeters and ushers to round out their monthly schedules. Serve once a month or more, or be on their sub list!
  • Our Thrift Shop is serving more people, selling more things, receiving more donations since they moved across the street. This well-oiled organization has more creative ideas on how a person can be a real help with small tasks!!
  • Angels On Call members receive emails when unique jobs come up which we need to have done to help church run better. Placing labels for bulk mail jobs. Helping decorate the worship spaces seasonally. Helping UNdecorate! Being extra greeters at special events. One never knows!
  • Read with a child. Play with a child. Be a VAST volunteer in the afterschool program from 3-6 PM one day a week, Monday-Thursday. Your choice!
Bev Campisi finds joy in her job as Volunteer Coordinator and will love the chance to help you decide how your Sacred Doing might look in this new year. Email her at [email protected] to learn more! She will help you find a way to realize how volunteering can be such a healthy choice for you!

Weekend Food Update
The Weekend Food team is currently feeding about 750 children each weekend, covering 11 schools. Your generosity in funding this program has allowed us to provide more variety in the food items this year, adding items like breakfast cereals and crackers and cheese to vary the menu. We've also made some changes in the program for the middle schools and high schools, where the students are more self-conscious about receiving the food.  As always, your commitment makes Weekend Food work. We have around 130 people volunteering each semester, and that includes some community groups as well as our members.  We still have openings for volunteers, particularly for bagging and delivering. Food for the GRACE Food Pantry
We collected 66 items for God Can last week. Don't forget to grab some extra items when you do your grocery shopping! GRACE is low on condiments, salt and pepper, ramen noodles, juice, pasta sauce, dry pastas, canned meat, and canned fruit. Visit the GRACE website for a full list of needs. If you would like to donate any of these items, please bring your donations to the God Can bins outside the church office or in the Sanctuary Foyer/Atrium.

Musikgarten is now registering for the winter/spring semester. Watch your child grow through the wonder of music! Simplicity

"God made us plain and simple, but we have made ourselves very complicated." (Ecclesiastes 7:29 GNT) Austen Farrer, an English theologian and philosopher, once said, "Do you want to bear fruit for God? Simplify your life, do fewer things and do them well." He was talking about our tendency to let distractions get in the way of our relationship with God. Too often, we complicate our lives by acquiring more than we need to, whether material goods, activities, or relationships. When we spend our lives doing things that keep us busy but don't really matter we sacrifice the things that do. This causes us to put too much of our efforts in the wrong place. Keep reading...
Caught Caring
Poinsettia Angels
Thanks to all the people who purchased and donated a poinsettia to beautifully decorate our worship areas this Christmas. The Altar Flower Delivery Ministry delivered approximately 50 plants to our home-bound members and to those who have recently had surgery, health issues or a death in the family.  Another 20 plants were delivered to the Grapevine Housing apartments next door to the church campus. Poinsettias were also used for a Memorial Service, a Staff/Volunteer Luncheon held in Leach Hall last week and remaining plants were then offered to VAST workers and to the Metroport Meals on Wheels group. Thanks to those who helped make the deliveries - Terri Lane, Emily Diehm, Zona and Jim Peterson, and Annie and John Goodrich, Tana Thomas, and Reneé Tielkemeier.
