County to increase enforcement of abandoned vehicles this winter
In addition to the implementation of
three new snow zones, Washington County Department of Land Use & Transportation (LUT) is preparing to be more stringent on reporting abandoned vehicles to the Washington County Sheriff's Office for possible citations and towing.
Abandoned vehicles are a safety hazard, particularly in winter weather. They can impact drivers' line of sight and block snowplows, emergency vehicles and public transit.
"Abandoned vehicles prevented us from plowing several roads in a timely manner last year," said Todd Watkins, Manager, LUT Operations and Maintenance Division. "We had to wait until cars were towed from medians and shoulders before we could plow. That meant that these roads were unplowed for several days which created challenging driving conditions."
According to the Washington County Sheriff's Office, citations for
abandoned vehicles carry fines of about $110, plus towing costs. However, this year motorists driving in the snow zones on
175th Avenue,
Barnes Road and
Cornell Road will be required to have traction devices on or in vehicles. This is expected to reduce the number of abandoned vehicles.
"The areas we've identified as snow zones did have several abandoned vehicles last winter," Watkins said. "Traction devices on vehicles will help with that."
