Victorian Evening Update

Victorian Night is only 3 Fridays away on Friday 18th November.  So far as Ilminster is concerned this is the "official" start of Christmas when the town's amazing Christmas Lights are switched on.  We are the first town in South Somerset to do this so get your Christmas shopping off to a flying start by joining in the late night shopping bonanza.

One of the big events as part of the festivities is the Lantern Parade with over a hundred children taking part and we are expecting some huge lantern to round the event off.  But we need to have the help of some of you to act as marshals because the guys who usually help from the Carnival Clubs and Carnival Committee are not available because the carnival circuit schedule has been changed and they will be involved at Wells carnival.

So we need at least 8 - 10 people to help make the one of Ilminster's major events safe.  You only need to be reasonably fit and responsible and of an age and demeanour that people are likely to pay attention to you.  Full briefing will be given on the night together with Hi-viz jacket.  You will be working with experienced and where necessary, appropriately qualified people.  So come on Ilminster, step up to offer a few hours time.
Please get in touch with Mike Fry-Foley on
  michael@malherbie.co.uk for further information.

Spotlight On Victorian Evening

The famous Ilminster Victorian Evening and Christmas Lights Switch-on is on Friday 18th November and kicks off at 6.30pm with a Lantern Parade of more than 100 lanterns from Greenfylde School to the Market Square. The Christmas lights, which are reckoned to be amongst the best in South Somerset, are switched on at 7.00pm and throughout the day local schools sing Christmas songs in the Market House.

On the night there are three bands, including the spectacular HMS Heron band in the Market House from 6.30 to 8.00pm and the popular Salvation Army band outside the Dolphin Pub, plus two choirs in Silver Street from 7.00pm, a Fairground in East Street, the very popular Martock Puppets from 7.00pm, several displays of interesting Victoriana, and loads of hot food and drink vendors.  The pubs are also open for a warming drink and both The Lemon Tree and The Green House will be open for teas and coffee.

Many shops in town are open for late night shopping with attractive promotions to get your Christmas shopping off to a flying start. Shops from Ditton Street and in Swan Precinct will be open and in Swan Precinct there will be a mulled wine stall run by the Lions, a Sweet Cart, and several stalls selling bric-a-brac and soft toys.  There will be other activities in the Tesco Courtyard.

In the Parish Hall at the top of North Street there is a Christmas Fair in aid of Epilepsy and a Santa's Grotto in the Ile Youth Club in Frog Lane from 6.30pm.  Remember that the Ilminster Arts Centre at the Meeting House is also a popular place for a quick top up of mince pies.

On your way around town don't forget to look out for the winners in the Shop Window Competition.  They always show great creativity - this year's theme is "A Winter Wonderland" - with tremendous competitive spirit between the retailers.  See if you agree with the judges!

So come and join us for a terrific start to the Christmas Season.  Hope to see you there.

Please note that Ilminster streets will be closed from 5.30 - 9.00pm.
