Healthy Michigan Plan Seeks input on Operational Protocols
The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services is seeking public comment on the Operational Protocol for the MI Health Accounts, Healthy Behaviors Incentives Protocol, and Healthy Michigan Plan Marketplace Operational Protocol, which can be accessed below:

Identifying human trafficking victims:
How physicians can help
As the issue of human trafficking gains well-deserved attention and resources, the importance of physicians identifying victims has risen to the forefront. Many states, including Michigan, are including training in licensing requirements.
The American Osteopathic Association's (AOA) The DO features Alan Janssen, DO, the medical director at the emergency department of Genesys Regional Medical Center in Grand Blanc Michigan. The article focuses on identifying signs of abuse consistent with human trafficking and features a toolkit Dr. Janssen helped develop.
Michigan ranks 7th among states in terms of human trafficking cases reported. The Michigan Department of Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs (LARA) has instituted new education requirements for health care providers.

Autumn Scientific Convention, the MOA is offering a session, "
Recognition of Human Trafficking for Healthcare Providers," featuring Dr. LaClaire Bouknight. The session is Friday, November 3, 2:30-3:30 pm.

McLaren Northern Michigan receives 5 Star CMS rating
McLaren Northern Michigan is the only hospital in the state that can claim a five-star rating from the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid (CMS), being a Magnet® designated hospital through the American Nurses Credentialing Center® (ANCC) for excellence in nursing and a top 10 hospital in the state by U.S. News & World Reports.
Along with being the only hospital in Michigan with all three of the aforementioned credentials, McLaren is one of only 13 in the entire nation to earn all three.
"The quality ratings we received from these organizations is just another verification of the kind and compassionate care and service provided by the colleagues at McLaren Northern Michigan," stated David M. Zechman, President and CEO of McLaren Northern Michigan.
In order to be recognized, McLaren had to excel in areas such as safety, best practices and patient satisfaction.

MOA provides healthcare perspective to Greg Kelser Camp
On August 9, the Michigan Osteopathic Association (MOA) joined MSU legend Greg Kelser at his annual basketball camp.
While the main purpose of the camp is basketball, there is a focus on academics that sets the Kelser camp apart.
The MOA presented to over 100 campers in small groups as they rotated through the stations on the fundamentals of basketball.
Interaction with the campers included discussions about their futures - both in making healthy life choices and in pursuing an academic path toward healthcare. Campers learned about MSU College of Osteopathic Medicine's (MSUCOM) "Future DOcs," a summer camp for high school upperclassmen eyeing a career as a DO and the Osteopathic Medicine Scholars Program for MSU undergrads.
As the campers will soon be headed back to school, the event was a great opportunity for the MOA to highlight the importance of vaccinations, utilizing materials from the IVaccinate campaign the MOA is involved with.
This is the third year the MOA has been a part of the camp and once again the program featured volunteers whose enthusiasm quickly won over the up-and-coming hoopers.

Metro Health announces expansion of gastroenterology services
With the addition of seven new physicians, Metro Health - University of Michigan is more than doubling its gastroenterology team.
Along with new physicians, on August 15, new "subspecialty" services were added to provide top-level care in Grand Rapids. These new services include Hepatology, Inflammatory Bowel Disease and Interventional Endoscopy.
"We are excited to announce an expansion in our gastroenterology services which will benefit all residents in West Michigan," said President & CEO Mike Faas.

MSUCOM Launches CARE Team
The MSU College of Osteopathic Medicine CARE Team is a new initiative that promotes preventative help seeking and using available mental health services. The goal is for students to develop career-lasting strategies for managing stress and boosting resiliency.
Resilient doctors rely on emotional self-awareness, self-compassion and other psychological tools to better buffer the inevitable life challenges all humans encounter. Studies have shown a compelling positive relationship between physician self-reported life satisfaction and patient care satisfaction.

Beaumont Health, Royal Oak to open new emergency room facilities in late August
On August 31, Beaumont Health, Royal Oak will open its newly expanded Emergency Center. The August expansion is just the first step of a four phase renovation slated to be completed by the end of 2018.
In the first new phase, 53 new private adult beds will be available for patients. Changes also include four trauma care bays and an area for expedited care for patients with minor afflictions. This update will also help to serve one of the busiest ERs in the nation, as Beaumont's Royal Oak facility had over 130,000 visits in 2016 alone.

"We wanted to provide a patient and family-centered environment with accommodations and amenities that better support the high-quality emergency care that consumers have come to expect from Beaumont," said Rosanna Morris, president, Beaumont Hospital, Royal Oak.
One other area of improvement in the center is technology. The expansion features newer CT and MRI machines as well as more bedside access to Doppler Ultrasound, which can be used to find things like blood clots.

Governor Snyder announces new council on opioids, enforcement
On Tuesday, August 15, Gov. Rick Snyder created the Council on Opioid and Prescription Drug Enforcement. Headed by Lt. Gov. Brian Calley, the council will focus heavily on collaboration and cooperation between state, local and federal agencies in regards to policing and curtailing the opioid epidemic in Michigan.
