Dear Friend:

When you look up in the sky on Monday morning you will be witnessing one of the most remarkable natural events of our lifetime, the "Great American" Solar Eclipse! A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon completely blocks out the Sun, turning the sky dark for just a few moments. This has not happened in the U.S. since 1918 and while San Diego is not along the path of totality, it is still a celestial event you won't want to miss.
It's moments like this that capture the nation's attention and shine a spotlight on science. Excitement has been building for weeks here in San Diego and across the country. Children and adults alike are asking questions about the eclipse and planning their Monday around viewing this phenomenon. That's what science does-it evokes curiosity, sparks passion and provokes inquisitive minds. An event like this has the potential to inspire the next generation of aeronautical engineers, astronauts and researchers. Many children may look up that morning and see the endless opportunities science has to offer.
We envision a San Diego where every child and adult can be inspired by the wonder of science. I'm delighted that the Fleet is part of this highly anticipated event. We'll be open early and will offer a free outdoor viewing event from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. for all San Diegans. But even if you can't make it to Balboa Park, don't miss this opportunity to take part in this historic event.
Please join us Monday morning, either at the Fleet or from wherever you are, to watch the Great American Solar Eclipse and remember to do it safely, with a pinhole camera or solar glasses. You too may see beyond the eclipse to the endless possibilities of science.

Warm regards,

Steve Snyder, Ph.D.
Chief Executive Officer
