When you look up in the sky on Monday morning you will be witnessing one of the most remarkable natural events of our lifetime, the "Great American" Solar Eclipse! A solar eclipse occurs when the Moon completely blocks out the Sun, turning the sky dark for just a few moments. This has not happened in the U.S. since 1918 and while San Diego is not along the path of totality, it is still a celestial event you won't want to miss.

It's moments like this that capture the nation's attention and shine a spotlight on science. Excitement has been building for weeks here in San Diego and across the country. Children and adults alike are asking questions about the eclipse and planning their Monday around viewing this phenomenon. That's what science does-it evokes curiosity, sparks passion and provokes inquisitive minds.
