Every now and then I catch the news at 6:00.  I have to say that watching current events is not always encouraging.  Networks always place one side against another and thrive on the latest tragedy.  As Christians our hope is always above the latest drama and focused on the good news of Jesus Christ.

At Christ Covenant School we have plenty of positive features that will lift our eyes above the struggles of our current events.  This year we have over 400 students and families who have chosen to learn in an environment centered on Christ and His plan for humanity.  That news in itself tells us that there is hope for our nation as families are committing themselves to build future leaders who will serve from a Christian perspective.

I am reminded of God's words to Hezekiah, to Elijah, and to the Apostle John.  "Do not be afraid...for there are more with us than with him."  2 Chronicles 32:7 "I have reserved seven thousand in Israel, all whose knees have not bowed to Baal." 1 Kings 19:18 "He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world." 1 John 4:4

Christians always have this good news, and as a school we would like to share this good news with you.  One of our seniors, Sage Pittman, has created an online news source with stories about our students over the summer that highlights the good things God is doing through them and our school.  For a breath of fresh air and some encouraging stories, visit their latest post at The Spartan Standard Online.

Enjoy reading these encouraging stories and also reading the newsletter about good news happening right in our school.  As we begin this new year, our prayer is that each student will learn the best news of all time.  "For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, so whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life."   John 3:16

Eclipse News
Monday, the 21st, will be the solar eclipse in our area starting around 1:15 until 2:45. Christ Covenant will be operating under normal hours, but with some precautions to protect our students.  We will not be going outside as a school during that time to directly observe the eclipse due to the potential damage for eyes without protective glasses, but students will be able to see the effects from inside the building.  Some specific classes will have access to live streams that will allow them to observe the event, but these will take place within the normal class formats.

Please inform your child of the event so that they will be prepared to see the darkness from inside the building and make them aware of the general safety guidelines.  A list of suggestions is available at NASA safety guidelines..
As always, if you as a parent wish to pull you child early for any reason or request that they stay at school until the entire eclipse window has passed, we will be happy to accommodate your requests.

Epi Pens, Inhalers and Other Meds
Please make sure you are in compliance with our policy regarding administration of medications during the school day.

Medications : If a student is in need of specific over-the-counter medication during the school day, the parent must bring it to the school with written instructions on the proper administration of such medication(s). If prescription medication or any other non-prescription medication prescribed by a physician is to be administered during the school day, parents shall have the "CCS Authorization for Medication" form (available on www.christcs.org ) completed by a physician/medical provider. The "Pitt County Schools Authorization for Medication, form # EPS-50", is an acceptable substitution for the Christ Covenant form.

No medications may be kept in the student's possession or in his/her locker, desk, or book bag, with the exception of asthma inhalers and Epipens and as authorized by the medical provider's signature on the EPS-50 "Green Form". All asthma inhalers and Epipens should be labeled with the child's name. Parent approval form for the general administration of over-the-counter drugs such as Tylenol, Ibuprofen, cough drops, and antacids, must also be completed via RenWeb.  Log on to RenWeb and follow links for "Family Information", "Update Family & Student Information" and scroll down to update your child's medical information.  These medications will be administered to the student by the Receptionist and only with permission from the parent. If prescription medication is needed on a regular day-to-day schedule, it must be kept and dispensed from the school office. It is the parent's responsibility to make sure that all prescriptions are current (not expired) and up-to-date.

Correction
Last week's newsletter incorrectly stated the Christmas and Spring Concerts for JK and K would be held in the morning at 8:00.  We should have said the Concerts for JK, K AND 1st grades will be held at 8:00 a.m.

First grade families should have received an e-mail correcting this information.  For the benefit of our school community, the following provides the corrected version:

This year, we have changed the times for our Lower School annual concerts (Lessons & Carols and Spring Concert).  We will be holding the Junior Kindergarten, Kindergarten and 1st grade concert at 8:00 a.m. on December 7 (Lessons and Carols) and May 10 (Spring Concert).  We'll hold the concerts for grades 2 -6 on the same dates beginning at 7:00 p.m.
