Pedestrian fatalities spiral upward
Thank you for your generous support!
A sincere thank you to each of you who contributed to PEDS in 2015. Thanks to you, we met the $10,000 Challenge Match -- which means your gift will have twice the impact.

Your contributions promote increased investment in sidewalks, better access in construction zones and safe ways to cross busy streets in the Atlanta region. Your support plays a big role in making communities here better places to walk.

I can tell you that 2017 is going the be a great year for people who walk -- and it's all because of you.

Walking shouldn't be hazardous to your health
Walking has many benefits, and perhaps most important, it's one of the best and easiest things you can do to improve your health.

But sadly, 234 people lost their lives while walking in Georgia last year. That's the worst in over 35 years.

Pedestrian fatalities - 1975-2016

As a report released this week confirmed, our streets are Dangerous by Design. Wide, high-speed roads are a recipe for tragic crashes. This is unacceptable.

To reverse the epidemic of pedestrian fatalities, local, regional and state agencies need to put safety first. T ransportation agencies and elected officials focus most on "congestion relief." When you speak with government officials about transportation needs, please ask them to get their priorities right.

Being stuck in traffic for a few minutes is well worth it if it means that you or a loved one won't lose your life in a wreck. Even one death is too many.
