Letter from the President

Nicholas Unkovic
BABC President & Partner

Dear Friend of the BABC,

What a year-end it has been for your BABC! Our 53rd Annual Christmas Luncheon certainly lived up to its reputation - I would like to extend my thanks to all those who were involved: our VIP Sponsors, Live Auction Donors, Grand Raffle Donors, Table Prize Donors and of course the many volunteered and staff who helped ensure the day ran smoothly. I would also like to thank our guests all 950 of you! I hope the day was enjoyed by all. And, because of your generosity, we were able to raise $25,500 for Raphael House, our beneficiary for eleven years in a row. If you have not had a chance to do so, please take a look at the photos from the day here. Once again thank you all for your continued support and I hope you will join me in looking forward to next year's Luncheon, to be held on Friday 8 th December at the Fairmont Hotel. Save the date!

The BABC also held its Young Professionals Happy Hour, which took place at Hotel Vitale. Many thanks to Café Americano for hosting the event for our guests, whom of which represented a variety of industries including tech, fashion, law and product design. We look forward to many more Young Professionals events in the New Year.

Our next large event will be our 27th Annual Economic Luncheon, taking place January 25 th at the City Club in San Francisco. This event tends to sell out quickly so please don't delay in purchasing your tickets. I look forward to seeing some of you there.

Many thanks again to all of our Members and Friends for your support of the BABC in 2016 - here's to a successful 2017 for all of us!

All the best,
Nick Unkovic

Having the ability to live and work in San Francisco, I consider myself very lucky. Alongside the incredible working environment and the fascinating issues, one of the main reasons I wanted to work here is to be a part of the UK-US relationship. Since Winston Churchill first coined the term 'Special Relationship' in 1946 our partnership has expanded exponentially.

For example, did you know the US is Britain's largest single trading partner and the UK's top export destination? The US remains by far our largest inward investor. Our partnership - worth over $200 billion a year-- has created a million jobs on both sides of the Atlantic.

Or that UK-US collaborations have resulted in 26 Nobel prizes for science and economics? Most recently, British and American researchers worked together to detect gravitational waves, a central tenant of Albert Einstein's Theory of Relativity.

The strength and depth of our military and security is unmatched in the world and underpinned by a a strong set of shared values.

The commitment to the relationship only continues to grow. The UK announced we will open three new government offices throughout the United States this year, including San Diego. In the private sector, British Airways and Virgin Atlantic are committed to expanding service between the UK and the US, including four new flights connecting the US's West Coast this year. That's thousands of more seats allowing opportunity for businesses to connect globally, tourists to explore the wonderful things the UK and the West Coast of the US has to offer.

But underpinning it all is the strength of the personal relationships. From what I've seen in my first five months here, I know that the special relationship will continue to evolve, grow and change, and I hope each of you are seeing the benefits and able to contribute to this incredible connection.

Community Event at San Francisco Zoo (Hosted by BABC Corporate Member Aboda)

San Francisco Zoo's very own polar bear, "Uulu", received a very special delivery to her habitat on Friday, November 11 - ten tons of snow! At 35 years young, "Uulu" is the oldest polar bear in North America, a testament to the excellent care she receives at SF Zoo. Providing the option to roll and relax in the snow is an opportunity to enrich the polar bear within her habitat.

ABODA, a leader in providing global housing solutions for some of the world's best-known brands, generously sponsored the snow to enhance "Uulu's" space. ABODA opened a regional office serving the Greater Bay Area in April 2016 and has been delivering its innovative corporate housing solutions and award-winning customer service ever since.

Theresa May to Give Britain Lowest Corporation Tax of World's Top 20 Economies

PM Theresa May will offer British business an olive branch following a series of disputes by vowing to cut corporation tax to a record low. In a speech to business leaders ahead of the Autumn Statement, Mrs May will commit Britain to having the lowest corporation tax of the world's 20 largest economies.

It suggests that the Government will cut corporation tax further and faster than expected, potentially going lower than the 15% rate promised by Donald Trump ahead of the US Presidential election.
