I hope you have been enjoying your summer! It has been a busy and eventful time here on campus, welcoming visiting alumni and youth campers and preparing for the start of the Fall 2017 semester.

It has been wonderful to greet so many of you at Muskie events throughout the summer!

On June 16-18, Muskies reminisced, reconnected, and celebrated Muskie Pride at
Alumni Weekend
. Congratulations once again to our 50th Reunion Class of 1967, to all our reunion classes and to Distinguished Service Award honorees Bill Lovejoy '51, Ben Shaver '50 and Jim Woolard '64.

Muskie Night at the Zoo on July 19 brought together nearly 400 Muskies, including alumni, incoming first year students, faculty, and staff to enjoy zoo exhibits, a picnic dinner and a private animal encounter featuring a baby kangaroo and baby snow leopards.
We also enjoyed Muskie Nights at the Pittsburgh Symphony Orchestra
concert
on July 14, the Cleveland Indians game on July 24,
the Cincinnati Reds game on August 4, and the Columbus Clippers game on August 18.
Mark your calendar now for Homecoming 2017 on Friday and Saturday, October 13-14 - we hope to see you there!

EXTENDING THE LONG MAGENTA LINE
It's almost time to welcome the Class of 2021 for their first year as Muskies! Several hundred of our incoming students were on campus on Friday, August 4 for

MUSKIE FELLOWS SUMMER 2017
Our annual Muskie Fellows program supported eight student-faculty collaborative research teams this summer:
Allissa Brown '19, Alex Furst '19, Donny Ingold '20, and Jolyn Shunk '20 continued the study of grassland birds at The Wilds with Jim Dooley, the Bill and Martha Lovejoy Distinguished Professor in Biology, and Danny Ingold, the Homer A. Anderson Distinguished Professor in the Natural Sciences.
Alexis Christman '18 and Associate Professor of Psychology Ana Kehrberg provided six interactive sessions through the New Concord Area Arts and Recreation Department (NCAARD) to educate local 3-6 year-olds about the human body.
Staci Wilson '18, Warren Wilson '18 and Associate Professor of Engineering Sandra Soto-Caban adapted popular electronic toys for children with disabilities.
Macey Zambori '19 and Associate Professor of Biology Amy Santas studied the dystroglycan complex in skin to explore potential biomedical prospects for epidermal healing.
Elizabeth Files '19 and Assistant Professor of Music Zebulon Highben researched the potential benefits of voice training and choral singing for special needs students.
Ariana Del Signore '18 and Professor of English Jane Varley studied campus print culture and created an archive of First Circle and Muscoljuan publications.
Carmelita Shook '19 and Professor of Chemistry Lois Zook-Gerdau partnered with the Muskingum Soil and Water Conservation District to study agricultural nutrient efficiency.
Yuning Ji '20, Ziheng Xu '20, Xinyue Xu '19, and Professor of Political Science Walter Huber investigated how Chinese firms respond to a slowing economy.
The Muskingum County Business Incubator (MCBI) provided fellowships to Samuel Roberts '18 and Jah-Haile Tyler '19, advised by Professor of Psychology Larry Normansell.

Our campus community enjoyed hosting youth camps and workshops throughout the summer, including:
Summer High School Music Theatre Camp, led by our Artist-in-Residence Carol Wilcox-Jones and Professor of Music Emeritus Bob Jones '63.
Cardinal Chorale music workshop, with public concerts featuring guest artists such as our own Len Thomas '52.
Basketball, soccer and football camps sponsored by our Athletics Department.
iBelieve Foundation leadership camps designed to encourage college attendance among Appalachian youth.

Sisterhood ReCoded, a coding camp for girls ages 11 to 14 years old, runs weekly from August 19 through September 9. Led by Assistant Professor of Computer Science Jay Shaffstall and co-sponsored by our Science Division and by the National Center for Women and Information Technology, the camp is one of 54 offered nationwide and the only one in Ohio.

SECOND TURF FIELD OPENS
Our fall-sport student-athletes returned to campus last week and are the first to use our new, multi-purpose turf field. Located on the north campus, this second turf field now provides our varsity and intramural teams with much-needed additional practice and event space and
will host home games for our varsity men's and women's soccer and lacrosse teams. With the new field, Muskingum becomes one of a select group of Division III institutions within our region to offer multiple turf athletic venues.

SPOTLIGHT ON OUR STUDENT-ATHLETES
Congratulations to four Muskies who were nationally recognized for their academic achievements:
Paige Watterman '18, business management/health administration double major, was named to the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Academic Honor Roll.
Erin Riley '18, athletic training major, was named to the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association (IWLCA) Academic Honor Roll.
Robbie Hisey '17, psychology/health science double major, was named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) 2016-17 Honors Court in recognition of academic excellence.
Logan Chuppa '18, political science major, was named to the National Association of Basketball Coaches (NABC) 2016-17 Honors Court in recognition of academic excellence.

ADMINISTRATIVE LEADERSHIP APPOINTMENTS
As we begin the 2017-18 year, I am excited to welcome the following colleagues to administrative leadership roles:
Dr. Nainsi Houston
is the Director of the Roberta A. Smith Library and Chair of the Department of Library Science. Previously Director of Library Services at Heidelberg University, she brings expertise in facilitating student learning through library research and collaboration resources.
Paul McClelland
has joined us as Associate Vice President for Institutional Advancement, with responsibility for the operations of the advancement office and Muskingum's planned giving initiatives.
Professor of Religion Dr. Rick Nutt is serving as Interim Provost, leading the offices of Academic Affairs and Student Affairs.
Steve Soba
is our new Vice President for Enrollment and Marketing, leading the Office of Admission and the Office of Marketing and Communications. He was most recently Vice President of Enrollment Management at Moravian College.

FACULTY RECOGNITION
Associate Professor of Political Science Richard Arnold recently visited six cities in Russia, exploring collaborative learning opportunities between our students and their counterparts in Russian World Cup host locations. His new Spring 2018 course, International Sport and Politics, will focus on the connections between politics and international sporting mega events such the World Cup and the Olympics. Dr. Arnold is the 2015 recipient of Muskingum's William Rainey Harper Award for outstanding research.

IN REMEMBRANCE
Our thoughts and prayers are with Muskingum's 19th president Dr. Sam Speck '59 and his family following the passing of his wife Sharon Anderson Speck '60 on July 14 in Columbus, Ohio. Sharon touched the lives of many Muskies during Sam's twelve-year tenure as Muskingum's president, and she created a lifelong legacy of service to others during their years of residence in Boston, Malawi, Washington, D.C., and Ohio.
