The return of students and staff is music to my ears.  The symphony that begins as the buses roll to a stop allowing their precious cargo to flow out into the buildings where they connect with friends and teachers, the opening and closing of lockers as children move to their classroom to take their seats as they begin the new year - excited to learn creates a distinctive melody that is special to the first days of school.

Many dedicated staff members have worked tirelessly this summer to prepare our buildings and grounds, attending training, planning new lessons, maintaining our transportation fleet, hiring new staff members and preparing administratively for the new school year.  We are proud of the work of these individuals and appreciate their efforts.  You will notice their efforts across the campus.
  • Landscape beautification
  • Use of 2015 Bond Issue funds for the district paving projects, roofing at the middle school and additional classroom improvements at Gardiner Center
  • Routine maintenance and inspection of all our buildings and grounds
  • Facelift to the Intermediate School lobby, and library transformation to the Media Center
  • Lunch Menus that allow you to filter for specific foods and view nutrition information
  • A visitor management system that will check guests against district and national databases as well as printing photo ID badges
  • Addition of the online fee payment option for parents via the Infinite Campus Parent Portal
As a school district, we recognize that the world has changed dramatically and the skills needed to be competitive in today's world are different than just a generation ago.  What has not changed is the vital role that families and community play in the success and achievement of our students.  This powerful collaboration provides relationships that connect our students to the greater community and supports their success not only educationally, but also socially.

We welcome partnerships with our parents, community and alumni which establish lasting connections and create authentic learning experiences for our students.  I look forward to the opportunity to meet you at upcoming Open Houses and Parent Orientations.

TOTAL ECLIPSE
On Monday, August 21, 2017, the total eclipse of the sun will turn skies dark.  For our area, the eclipse will occur between 1:06 p.m. and 3:51 p.m., with maximum coverage of the sun (80 percent) occurring at the mid-point of the eclipse just after 2:30 p.m. The sun will appear as a slim crescent at that time.

This is a rare occurrence and the safety of our students is our first priority.  The only safe way to look directly at the uneclipsed or partially eclipsed sun is through special-purpose solar filters/glasses that are necessary for viewing, therefore:
  • Students will remain indoors (1pm to dismissal) during the eclipse.
  • After-school athletics and activities will be held as normal. Students will be reminded of safety procedures and importance of not looking directly at the sun.
  • Staff members and bus drivers will reinforce the importance of not looking at the sun as students exit the building for dismissal.
Science teachers may discuss and view (using real time resources) this natural phenomena in their classroom as it pertains to their curriculum.

Our primary concern is helping students understand that looking at the sun during the time span of the eclipse can cause severe and irreversible damage to their eyes.  Please talk to your children about what an eclipse is and why it is dangerous to view the sun without protective eyewear.

Staff members will reinforce the safety message as the eclipse takes place.

Here are some links for your family to enjoy this rare occurrence.
NEW SECURITY MEASURES
Raptor Visitor Management System
Beginning this school year, we are implementing a new visitor system. The district will utilize the Raptor Visitor Management System to provide immediate, real-time screening for visitors, contractors and volunteers entering our buildings.

As you visit our buildings, please remember to bring your state issued ID. Your identification will be scanned and entered into the Raptor Visitor Management Systems. (It is important to note that the Raptor systems only scan the visitor's name, date of birth and photo for comparison with a national database of registered sex offenders. Any other information on the identification is not scanned by the system and is not stored or accessible to any of the users.)

All visitors will be scanned into the system and required to wear a visitor badge that features a photo and purpose of their visit.

A visitor's badge will not be necessary for those who visit our schools simply to drop off an item in the office or pick up paperwork.
SAFER SCHOOLS
Safer Schools Ohio Tip/Text Line: 844-SAFEROH
The Bullying/Safety Tip line is provided for all Ohio school districts by Ohio Homeland Security working with Ohio Department of Education. The tip line can be anonymous, or callers have the option to leave contact information.  Any threatening information or suspicious activity will be assessed by the Homeland Security team to determine the level of the threat.   If it's determined to be a high-level threat, they will communicate directly with local law enforcement and the school district.

Information that is only school related such as bullying, social media issues or other school related information will be routed directly to the school administrators to address.
NEW YEAR, NEW LUNCH MENUS
You will find that the lunch menus look a little different this year.  The Nutrislice menu program allows parents and students to filter lunch menus to identify specific allergen-containing foods and to view nutrition information.  A Nutrislice app is available for download by clicking on the app buttons on any lunch menu or by searching the app store or via the Lunch Menu tab on the District website.
NEW FACULTY
2017 New Staff
Eight new teaching staff have joined the Kenston faculty.  They filled positions created by retirements, resignations or extended leaves.  We look forward to the talents and dedication of our faculty and staff as they work to design lessons that are challenging, interesting and satisfying.
