This is Air and Water Show Weekend, so please be aware of additional road closures and areas of the lakefront blocked off for the show. Listed below are alternative routes and public transit information.

Last week there was a serious exposure of Chicago voters personal data in a security breach (Voting Machine Supplier Exposes 1.8 Million Voter Records).  ESS, The company that allowed the breach has issued a statement and the Chicago Board of Elections has responded with a statement that in part reads: "The back-up files that were held by ES&S on the AWS server had no impact on any voter records and had no impact on the vote tabulations or results of any elections...The Board's web sites do not contain any personal-identifying information such as dates of birth, partial Social Security numbers, driver's license numbers, etc."(PDF)

Robbery Awareness Tips
There have been a number of reported robberies in the area. The Police have issued a robbery awareness tip sheet to serve as a reminder to stay aware of your surroundings; please call 911 if you see someone suspicious in the area.
  • Always try to walk, jog, or ride your bike with a partner.
  • Avoid secluded, dark areas, and shortcuts. Stay on busy well-lit and heavily-populated streets.
  • Walk with energy, confidence and purpose. Hold your head up, look around constantly, be alert, and check your surroundings. Don't make it obvious if you are in unfamiliar territory.
  • Avoid wearing headphones and talking/texting on your phone. One of the main thefts is of smartphones.  Make sure not to put yours on display. You also need to be able to see and hear who is approaching from all directions.
  • If a person is walking towards you, make sure to look at them in the eye.  A robber is less likely to pick you as a target if they think you will be able to give a good description of them.
  • Never feel uncomfortable about calling 911 if you see someone acting suspiciously.  Make sure you can give a proper description of the person to the call taker; in particular, any distinguishing marks (tattoos, scars, etc).  When looking at clothes, always look at the shoes.  Someone can take off their coat when running away, but is unlikely to change shoes.
  • Try not to carry bulky purses, bags, or parcels. Purse flaps should be secured and turned toward the body at all times. Wallets should be carried in an inside coat pocket and cash in a front pants pocket. Always keep at least one hand free.
  • If you do take the bus alone at night, sit by the driver, stay awake and alert, and have someone meet you at your stop. If you travel by taxi, have the driver watch you safely enter your destination.
  • Never get in or out of your vehicle without doing a visual sweep of the immediate area for suspicious persons. Be sure that your doors are locked and windows closed. Do not park your vehicle in dimly-lit, isolated areas or parking lots.
  • Follow your instincts. If you think you are being followed and you don't feel safe, cross the street, change your route and prepare to run for help. Know of open businesses and other public areas that you can go to, if you need help.
  • Keep your family or friends advised of your whereabouts and what time you are supposed to arrive or return.

19th District News - via CWB
Note on Policing
Sufficient police officer manpower is required to maintain safety and order in our neighborhoods.  The origins and reasons for crimes are multifold, and so are the ways to reduce crime. But, substantial and unsafe reductions in officer manpower in the 19th District and the same substantial reductions have also hampered the police manpower and response times in the 14th District.  This year, the city budget will likely show another bloated police overtime line item, perhaps reaching $175 Million.  I have been critical of this overtime policy, much of which is unsubstantiated, and follows a Emanuel Administration policy of using overtime as a way of adding up manpower hours, versus hiring actual new officers with modern methods of training and discipline.  The hiring of roughly 490 new officers (not 1000) over a two year period will barely keep up with attrition. The policies must change and manpower in our areas must be increased.
Since manpower concerns are political ones, please call the Mayor's office and ask for changes to the policies.
