When Trauma Goes Untreated

Clara Reynolds
President & CEO
Prior to my arrival at the Crisis Center two years ago, I spent 20 years in the children's mental health system as a clinical social worker.  During my tenure as a child protective investigator, school social worker and an executive director, I worked with children and their families who were struggling from the aftermath of trauma. I learned that trauma takes a toll on people and when it is not effectively treated, it can have negative, long-term consequences on the life of the trauma victim.

I'll never forget 11-year-old Michael, who I met in 1995. He was being held at a Manatee County juvenile justice facility for repeated car thefts. As I got to know Michael, I learned about his trauma. He started getting into trouble when he joined a neighborhood gang at age 9.... READ MORE

Restoring Peaceful Sleep: Kenny's Story

There was a single, piercing bang.

Startled from his sleep, 6-year-old Kenny got out of bed and looked outside. What he saw changed his life forever.

His stepfather was dead. A gun was next to his body. His mother stood in shock nearby.

The weeks after his stepfather's suicide were a blur. There was a funeral, and he spent lots of time with family....

Seeking Therapy - The Barriers and the Solutions

People of All Ages Can Receive
Counseling at the Crisis Center
"It's just a phase - I'll feel better soon." "I'm embarrassed to talk about my feelings." "I don't want to dredge up old, painful memories." "I don't want my friends and family to know I'm struggling with emotional problems."

These are just a few of the reasons why some people do not seek therapy. And yet, they live with emotional pain every day. No one should have to live with this type of pain when help is available.

Counseling at the Crisis Center's Trauma Counseling Center begins with a phone call and brief conversation with a client representative who helps to determine whether the Trauma Counseling Center is a good fit.....READ MORE

The Circle: Connecting Sexual Assault Survivors

Call (813) 264-9955 to connect to The Circle
A sexual assault is one of the most devastating emotional traumas a person can experience. It can shatter one's sense of security and self-esteem, and can have a ruinous effect on the survivor's relationships and aspirations.

In addition to providing one-on-one counseling and advocacy services, the Crisis Center of Tampa Bay provides a weekly support group for adult survivors of sexual assault called The Circle.

The group is facilitated by a therapist from Corbett Trauma Center, but the focus of the group is not therapy. The group sets its own rules and is designed to be a positive, solutions-based environment. If one group member shares a personal struggle or obstacle, another member is able to share strengths and insights from their personal experience. Through this process, survivors come to realize they are not alone in the world, and learn skills they can use to help them in their recovery.

If you know someone who could benefit from an open, supportive environment such as The Circle, have them call (813) 264-9955 to connect with Corbett Trauma Center.
