businessofmonth
Business of the Month Loft on Sixth is an event venue located in downtown Osawatomie.  With over 15,000 square feet of event space, our staff can bring flair, elegance, creativity and best of all, exclusivity to each and every event.

In 2001, Dean and Judy Spears (Spears, LLC) decided to purchase the  building on the corner of Sixth and Main Street with the intent to lease the facility as retail space (lower section) and apartment units (upper section).

After the purchase, Spears, LLC secured a 5-year lease with Sears for a
retail outlet in the lower section of the building and refurbishing efforts
began.  During this period, it was determined that zoning, code and costs
made the apartment unit concept too difficult to pursue. A group approached with the idea to refurbish the upstairs into an event and wedding reception hall.  Spears, LLC was able to secure another 5-year lease on the 2nd floor
for this purpose and in 2003 both occupants began operations.

At the end of 2008, the owners of the Sears store center decided to retire
and corporate was unable to find another group to assume the outlet,
therefore the store closed.  The owners of the venue operation expressed interest in entering a lease contract for the entire building with the request
that Spears, LLC remodel the lower section to add a foyer, chapel, bride
& groom quarters and a rehearsal dining hall.  After securing a new
5-year lease with this group, remodeling efforts began in 2009 and the
facility  became operational in 2010 turning the entire building into a
full-service wedding venue.

Over the course of the next few years, the venue operation saw success in attracting bridal couples from the Kansas City Metro area performing hundreds of events at the facility.  Unfortunately, this did not correlate into
a successful venture for the venue owners and the operation closed in 2014.

During 2015, Spears, LLC began to pursue various options which included beginning a new operation, selling the building or partnering with another group.  It was also determined that if the building would continue as a venue, the building required modifications to ensure the safety of its guests.  So, during this same period, Spears, LLC began to develop a plan that would ensure that the building would meet current local, state and federal code guidelines for this type of operation.

By the end of 2015, Spears, LLC decided to pursue an operational
company and formed Loft on Sixth, LLC with Dean, Judy and their son, David Spears, as the managing members.  Beginning in 2016, a renovation plan was agreed to by the managing members and a construction loan was secured through First Option Bank allowing the plan to proceed.   In 2016, local construction groups worked to update the building per the renovation plan.

At the end of August, updates were completed and Loft on Sixth received
code approvals from the various government agencies.  Loft on Sixth
officially reopened on August 21st, 2016 with an open house to the
community and then held its' first event in October by hosting the Chamber's Annual Dinner.  Since, the venue has held various events that have included corporate Christmas parties, bridal and baby showers, birthday & graduation parties, reunions, memorials, and of course, weddings and receptions.

Since then, Loft on Sixth has continued to book weddings and events for
2017, 2018 and even into 2019.  The group is currently exploring many various options that include "boutique" small wedding packages, charitable event functions, dances, business meetings, etc.  The goal of the new
operation is to open it up to multiple functions while working to attract
people from the Kansas City Metro area into our community.

Loft on Sixth strives to work with local vendors, which have included
La Hacienda, We Be Smokin', Chris's CafĂ©, Hanes Florist, etc. and will
look  to work with others.  It is not only our goal to be a successful
business venture within our community but also successful for our other
local business groups, hopefully spurring additional business growth to revitalize the downtown area.

The building is celebrating its' one hundred-year anniversary and has
served the community in various capacities including a five and dime
store, various retail outlets, the lodge for the International Order of
Odd Fellows and even a dance studio.

The venue has become an exquisite destination for weddings, parties,
concerts, lectures, corporate dinners, fundraisers, meetings and many other events.   The restoration and enhancements to the facility has provided a
unique space that rivals many of the high end Kansas City venues but with
a more affordable outcome.

"Our goal is to learn your story, your style, your vision and design an unforgettable wedding/event unique to your taste."

Feel free to contact David Spears (call or text) at (913) 954-1429 to discuss event needs and to schedule a tour of the facility.
