Exam Time

With the semester closing on January 20, that means our first go around of Final Exams is approaching.  For those of you new to the Badger High Sch ool exam process I would like to take a moment and explain that to you.

At th e conclusion of each semester we have final exams in all classes.  This will be a portion of a student's calculated semester grade.  It is very important for stud ents to be prepared for these exams.

Exams are different for each class aligned to the types of classes your student is taking.  Some classes do traditional written tests, while others do practical or project-based exams.  Regardless of the exam, your student should ensure they are preparing properly.

Have a discussion with your student about upcoming exams.  Most may already know from the beginning of the semester while others will be learning about them a week or two out from exams.  Keep the discussion flowing throughout to help guide your student through the process.

It is also important to make sure your student has all work, projects, and assessments turned in before exams to ensure that it may be counted according to teachers' policies for those classes.  Understand that at the end of each term credit is determined on the averaging of quarter one, quarter two, and exam grades.  This calculation creates a semester grade which is factored in with prior semester grades to determine the student's GPA.  So as you see, it is extremely important for students to have all their ducks in a row.

Some other basic tips for exams include:
  • Good time management
  • Avoiding distractions when studying
  • Getting plenty of rest
  • Eating a good breakfast
  • Staying hydrated

Be a proactive part of your student's academic life, especially during semester ending points and exams.  Remember, if you or your student need a little help at this time of year, we do offer a plethora of after school labs Monday-Thursday in almost all of our core areas, and even elective areas.  Feel free to reach out to a teacher if you need more information on these opportunities.

Thanks for a great almost first half of the school year and keep up the great work!

"Badger High School is a Value Up school.  We recognize that each person in this school is valuable and of equal value.  That value is not determined by appearance, success, intelligence, or behavior.  It is found in our potential to treat each other well, to learn and grow, and because tomorrow has yet to be lived."

Gateway Visits Badger Automotive Students

On Friday December 9th Badger's automotive students had a visit from Gateway Technical College's Mobile Training and Certification Lab. This lab is used to transport training and certification equipment to high schools throughout the tri-county area. The equipment includes Snap-on multi-meter, 3D Dremel printers, Starrett Lab precision measurement, and Snap-on Torque equipment. The lab is available to transport training equipment related to high schools for their transcripted credit courses. The mobile labs insure that high school students have access to relevant, current equipment that cannot always be purchased by the high school districts. Badger students were able to work with precision measurement and torque equipment. Students saw what effect the use of socket extensions have on the torque applied to a fastener.

News From Badger's Counseling Center

FAFSA
As parents and guardians, January is your reminder to file your taxes.  For the college bound student, this is a reminder to fill out the FAFSA form if you have not done so yet. FAFSA stands for the Free Application For Federal Student Aid.  Any student looking to obtain federally funded grants and loans must complete the FAFSA in order to determine eligibility. Some students feel they will not be eligible for these types of aid and choose not to complete the form; however, keep in mind this form is sometimes a requirement in order to obtain additional scholarships and work study opportunities.

CLASS REGISTRATION
This year we will be continuing our transition to online course selection. The online course selection will be done through PowerSchool and it will be available during each class registration week. After the online course selection window closes, any changes will need to be done by meeting with a counselor.  The course guide will be available online this year on the Badger website. Please reference that when selecting courses. Information will begin to come out in January as to how students will go online and select courses.

SCHOLARSHIPS
Thanks to all those who came to our presentation on scholarships during the Parent/Teacher Conferences! Graduating seniors should continue to apply for the many scholarship opportunities available on Career Cruising and the Badger website. Several emails were sent to the senior class with information on how to access Career Cruising for scholarships. The General Scholarship Application is due on January 6th. There are many scholarships that have due dates later this spring as well. Please be aware of the criteria when applying, what the specific due date is and where to send the completed application. Good luck!
