From the desk of MCC President,
Mr. Ken Rasp

Prior to arriving in early July 2016, I provided to the Board of Trustees a Transition Plan. The main goal of the plan was to learn as much as I could about Muskegon Catholic Central. I talked about a "tool box" that I carried with me filled with experiences, strategies, and ideas gained throughout my almost forty years of college admission and Catholic school leadership positions. I knew from past transitions, that I needed to temper anything pulled from the "tool box" with the Mission, culture and traditions of Muskegon Catholic Central.  Thanks to all who have taken the time to share their Crusader story with me.  Your experiences have enthralled and excited me. They have opened the door and allowed me to gain a very real sense of MCC and its strengths and challenges.

It is obvious to me, and to so many of you, that our biggest challenge (and opportunity) is enrollment.  Instead of jumping to possible solutions, we decided to embark on a process that would allow us to gather important information and insight from stakeholders across the MCC family that would help us rearticulate our message and brand.
  • Start With Why Sessions - Three MCC groups - the Directors, Faculty and Staff, and the Board of Trustees - met and walked through a process whose purpose was to gain a real sense of our essence - the Why.  Participants were asked to provide their insight on What we do, How we do it, and Why we do it - drilling down to the why. They were also asked to share their insights on barriers and fixes.  The discussion in each session was passionate, spirited and real.
  • Listening Sessions - This past November ten Listening Sessions were held.  Hosted by a Crusader family, the sessions were kept small by design. Open ended questions were asked to generate conversation.  Session attendees were more than willing to share their MCC experience, insight and ideas.  Though a different process, it was amazing to hear many of the same insights and thoughts heard during the Start with Why sessions.
We are a point where we are beginning to review the many pages of insights, ideas, and perceptions gained in order to frame a sense of direction - and a very positive direction. I thank all who took the time to participate in one of these important and incredible sessions.

So many of you over these past six months have asked about my wife Kathy and her eventual trek north. I am excited to share that Kathy is now here.  The moving truck deposited all of our stuff in our new house on December 5th. Our youngest son Sam joined us this weekend. The house is becoming a home.

You are always welcome to return. Once a Crusader, always a Crusader.  May God bless you and keep you close to His heart.
2016 Wall of Honor Recipients
Educator-Dan Matusiewicz '62- After college graduation, Dan came back to teach at MCC and later became the Athletic Director.  Dan spent countless hours preparing and attending games and matches.  Other athletic directors knew his as "Catholic Dan." After retiring, you can still find Dan in the halls at MCC filling in as a substitute.  Dan truly bleeds green & gold!

Alumni-Robert Sullivan '82-After high school graduation, Bob assisted the MCC Marching Band by helping at band camp and later as the Marching Band Instructor.  Bob directed 15 of the MCC Spring musicals from the 90's through Oklahoma! in 2015.  Bob has also served on MCC boards for about 18 years, most recently ending his term as the President of the Board of Trustees in 2015.

Service-Steve Tejchma '80-
The Tejchma Family ran the fish fry's at MCC for over 40 years.  You could find Steve helping out alongside his brothers and sisters while still a student.  When Steve's parents could no longer run the fish fry's, Steve took over.  Steve is now in charge of the fish fry's at the Knights of Columbus #706 and many of their other fundraisers, including Wednesday night basket dinners.  With the funds generated at the K of C, the building on Fairfield has received many beautiful improvements!  Steve also spearheaded the Dream Garden renovation outside of the MCC cafeteria and the replacement of the exterior cafeteria doors and kitchen equipment.

Grades 7-12 Service Projects

No Hunger November
The High School Student Council conducted a service project called No Hunger November to help the local Salvation Army and Kids Food Basket. On each Monday in November, the students donated money to help the Student Council purchase canned goods that provided Thanksgiving meals for families in need for the Salvation Army. The student body and their donations helped raise $1200 for this cause which went to purchase 130 "baskets" of the following items: Corn, Green Beans, Cream of Mushroom Soup, Fried Onions, Sweet Potatoes, Boxed Potatoes, Cornbread, Stuffing, Gravy, Pumpkin, and Cranberry Sauce. After these items were purchased, they were delivered to the Salvation Army the Monday before Thanksgiving.

The second component to No Hunger November was to assist Kids Food Basket Muskegon.  Students donated Pretzels, Goldfish, Raisins, and Cheerios to create trail mix. This program provides dinners to elementary students in Muskegon County whose families are not always able to provide that for them. To gather these items, each first hour block was given an incentive that the students had to meet. Each student was encouraged to bring it at least 2 items to donate to the Kids Food Basket. We raised over 600 items to donate to this organization. The items were picked up just after Thanksgiving.

"Love Your Neighbor" Christmas Drive

Can you remember that Christmas morning feeling when you wake up in your bed, in the comfort of your own home, and walk out to see all of the presents under your Christmas tree? Our student council feels it's part of their duty as leaders of the Muskegon Catholic student body, and as a Catholic community, to provide others with the chance to have that same feeling. In that spirit, they've planned a Christmas fundraising drive. From December 5th-8th, Muskegon Catholic Central is collected funds for Every Woman's Place.
Elementary Advent Service Projects

Preschool-6th Grade
MCCE joined forces with Catholic Charities of West Michigan by collecting items for children that receive services (foster care, etc.) from CCWM. Currently, CCWM provides assistance to 290 Muskegon County children from ages 9-17 years old. This year they will be hosting a Christmas Store to assist families in Muskegon County that they service.  Students collected new soccer balls, basketballs, footballs, toys, hygiene products and hats and mittens.

Fourth Grade Class
In the spirit of giving more than we receive and as we prepare for Advent and the coming of Jesus the 4th grade class raised money by having bake sales to purchase Christmas gifts on behalf of the retired Dominican Sisters in Muskegon. Many of these Sisters do not have relatives to remember them during this time of year so we would like to help make their Christmas a little merrier! The 4th grade class raised $350 from their 3 days of bake sales! THANK YOU to everyone who helped support this fundraiser! Merry Christmas!
Hour of Code

Hour of Code is an initiative by nonprofit Code.org to make computer programming more accessible and to introduce more students to the in-demand field of computer science.

Students in 1st-6th grade completed fun coding activities based on familiar cartoon characters and involving arranging blocks of code on the screen.

Students in 7th-12th grade participated in a variety of activities, from building a website, creating their own music mix and building their own iPhone app.

In addition to participating in international Hour of Code events, MCC students learn about coding in their classes throughout the school year.  The "Hacking Club" was recently launched and meets after school to use computer coding to solve real-life problems.
Seussical the Musical

Seussical is a fantastical, magical, musical extravaganza! The colorful characters including Horton the Elephant, The Cat in the Hat, Gertrude McFuzz, lazy Mayzie and a kid with a big imagination - Jojo, who transport us from the Jungle of Nool to the Circus McGurkus to the invisible world of the Whos. Seussical is fun for the whole family! We are ecstatic to have our performances in March for 2017 and look forward to sharing these stories with you then.  This show was cast with 3rd-12th grade students at MCC and will be directed by  Jacqui Bernhardt '09.  Check out the cast list and other information on the web page!

MEET A CRUSADER STUDENT
Abigail (Abby) Winzer '18

Abigail is a graduate of St. Mary's in Spring Lake and is currently a junior at Muskegon Catholic Central where she is preparing to study music in college.

Abigail Winzer has spent her life developing her God given talent in music.  Singing in her Church choir provided her with a strong foundation and at fifteen she began training with Sara Jackson of the Boston Conservatory focusing on voice technique and music theory. In January of 2016, Abigail auditioned for and was selected to attend the Fine Arts Summer Academy in Nashville hosted by the critically acclaimed and Julliard trained Annie Moses Band.  At the Academy, Abigail so impressed the faculty that she was chosen for a solo performance at the Ford Theatre in the Country Music Hall of Fame where she thrilled the sold out audience with her interpretation of "The House That Built Me" by Miranda Lambert.  A few days later, Abigail found herself singing on stage at the Grand Ole Opry with Country legend and double platinum star Josh Turner.   Her incredible experience at the Fine Arts Summer Academy gave her the inspiration to embark on the production of her debut album "Rejoice"; a Christmas album that celebrates the Blessed Birth of our Savior.

Always surrounded by an abundance of love and laughter, Abigail enjoys spending time with her family and her beloved French bulldog.  Abigail loves to travel and is especially fond of small seaside towns with secluded beaches and great shopping.  As the granddaughter of a Korean War Veteran, the daughter of a Gulf War Veteran and the sister of a Midshipman at the United States Merchant Marine Academy, she routinely performs the United States National Anthem with pride at sporting events and considers an invitation to do so an honor and a privilege.

The Album-Available for purchase on iTunes:
"Rejoice" is a celebration of the Blessed Birth of our Savior.  Abigail Winzer along with recording artists Michael Crittenden reimagined her favorite Christmas songs in way that transports the listener to the Nativity of our Lord. The use of old world instruments such as the Armenian duduk commonly referred to as the "Shepard's flute" and the Celtic Harp gives this extraordinary album an ardent approach to our most beloved Christmas songs.  Abigail's ethereal voice, wrapped in the earthy textures of Bethlehem, elicits a feeling of pure joy as each song proclaims a Merry Christmas to all.

Monthly 50/50 Drawing

For just $12 you can be entered each month of 2017!
Print, complete and return this form to be entered!

For many years, Muskegon Catholic Central Schools have been blessed by the generosity of the Green & Gold Club. Athletic boosters raise money to assist MCC student-athletes in an array of areas, ranging from new uniforms and equipment, to transportation and athletic facility upgrades.

The majority of booster funds are raised through our 50/50 raffle. This is extremely popular because a winner is drawn each month, and the cash prize is anywhere from $500 to $1000 or more depending on ticket sales. Tickets are $1 each, and there is no limit of how many may be purchased. Typically, folks pay $12 at the end of the year, and receive a full year's worth of tickets beginning with the January drawing. However, tickets may be obtained at any time during the year.

Do you have news to share?  We'd love to include you!
Ed Kuznar '60

Kuznar.  Many of you may have heard or seen the name, but don't know who that is.  It may still be a mystery as he is a quiet and humble man and was surprised with this interview to ask him about his MCC experience and "why he supports MCC."  Ed attended Churchill Elementary before transferring to St. Jean's in 7th grade.  Ed would hitchhike to school from over by the float bridge or get a ride from school from his dad on his way to work.  He often served at mass at 7am because he would arrive to school so early!  Ed went on to Muskegon Catholic Central where he played football for 1 year until he suffered an injury and his dad didn't want him to play anymore.  Ed's dad, Frank, founded Quality Tool & Stamping (QTS) in 1957 and Ed would work there while in high school.  Ed returned to work there after college and now runs the day-to-day operations with his brother, Dan '62.  Ed is a proud alum and describes the MCC Class of 1960 as "close knit" and he always attends the reunions.  Ed continuously supports MCC athletics, mission trips, Rainbow Auction, Fund-A-Need and the annual fund.  This is the second year that MCC has had the "Kuznar Match."  Ed simply stated that he supports MCC because he's very fortunate to be able to and he wants MCC to continue to exist and to grow.

Jamie (Helsen) Hekker '98

A 1998 MCC graduate, I earned my BA in English from Western Michigan University before attending Indiana University's School of Public and Environmental Affairs to study Nonprofit and Public Management. I graduated with a Masters of Public Affairs in 2005 and have worked in public service ever since. After working in fund development for Indiana University and Michigan State University, I returned home to Muskegon in 2008 and worked at United Way of the Lakeshore and later, United Way of Battle Creek and Kalamazoo Region. My current position takes me out of the nonprofit sector as I am now the Community Engagement Coordinator at Public Health Muskegon County. One of the most exciting parts of this job is serving as the coordinator for the 1 in 21 Healthy Muskegon County initiative. The goal is improve healthy behaviors in Muskegon County so we can be the best place to live, work and play!

Outside of work, I've been a member of the Greater Muskegon Jaycees for over 7 years, serving on the local and state boards, and will serve as the chapter president in 2017. While currently sidelined with an injury, I'm still an active part of Run Muskegon as a walker, volunteer and supporter. I live in Fruitport with my husband, Michael and cat, Jayne.
