We are almost there folks - almost totally D-U-N with 2016 and into 2017. I'm ready, are you!? 2016 was pretty good, I'm not mad at it, but I always look forward to a new year with new opportunities and challenges. I started to search youtube.com with 'best of 2016' to share with you, and settled with the first video I came across. I couldn't take the grin off of my face watching it - truly remarkable people there! I wish I had just half of some of their skill! I hope you enjoy it!
I also hope you enjoy your upcoming New Year's Eve and any celebrations you may have happening. We can start celebrating here at Paul's by knowing that we are open for regular hours on Saturday, New Year's Eve, and we are also open for slightly modified hours on Sunday, New Year's Day! Check our calendar for more info and plan on getting a jump start on all of those resolutions, honey-do's and 'round-to-its. Here's to 2017!

New @ Paul's
The "SmartHome" is here, and it's pretty cool if you ask me. :) Within the past year, we have added some products that I promise you will love. My first and favorite so far is the Ring Video Doorbell. I have 'answered' my door from my in-laws house on my smartphone, actually talking to and seeing the person - check out the video here. I'm telling you, this is one of the coolest things ever. It also has a motion setting you can set from 5' up to 30' that will alert you of any motion, which was helpful over the holidays when the UPS or FedEx drivers were at my door dropping off boxes. The Ring Video doorbell either hard-wires to your existing doorbell, or you can buy a chime that simply plugs in an outlet in your house. I highly, highly recommend the Ring.
 My second favorite new item in our stores an on my front door is the Kevo Deadbolt by Kwikset. Now I don't have to leave the key in the 'rock' by the front door, I can send a temporary guest key to anyone with an email address. I also don't have to worry about my kids misplacing their key anywhere, there phone is their key. Now, the Kevo is just blue-tooth, not wifi, so you cannot unlock and lock your door remotely without upgrading to Kevo Plus and purchasing a gateway, but it is still a pretty handy item and one of my favorites.
 My third favorite, and only my third because I just got it - literally just installed by my husband in minutes yesterday, is the Nest thermostat. Not only was it easy to install, (he seemed pretty happy with it - as compared to other crazy things I've had him install for me) it's easy to set up and I am so looking forward to watching it program itself and actually having a programmed thermostat. I can tell you the almost 8 years we've lived in our house, we had never programmed our 'programmable' thermostats. Now the Nest will do it for us and save us money in the process.
This is just the start of what the smart home can do, and just the start of what Paul's will be carrying. We plan on expanding our connected home offerings in the coming year so keep your eyes open for more cool stuff!

Rock n' Roll Arizona Marathon!
It's coming January 15th, 2017! For all of you running, I wish you the best of luck and the best of times!
For those of you NOT running, but need to run in to Paul's Ace Hardware at Scottsdale and McDowell, know that the half marathon route goes right in front of our store and parts of Scottsdale Road will be restricted until about 11:15 or so. BUT we will still be open and you CAN still get to us from Palm lane by driving behind LA Fitness. Check out the maps and information provided and we will see you then!

Protect the P's
I don't know about you, but I have an incredibly small personal temperature comfort level, just ask my husband. Maybe it's the effects of being a desert rat my entire life, who knows, but I do know it is starting to get cold and will hopefully get a little colder. So don't forget to take some winter precautions and protect the four P's:
People - cover up when you go outside!
Plants - bring those sensitive potted plants inside or even to your garage against an interior wall for warmth. Cover your outdoor plants with fabric. Frost cloth works great. Do not cover them with a tarp or plastic drop cloths. Extra mulch also helps keep some ground warmth.
Pets - bring your pets inside. If it's too cold for you, it's too cold for them.
Pipes - wrap exposed faucets or pipes, consider those in unheated crawl spaces or attics. And yes, pipes have been known to freeze here :)

I found this article about the common New Year's Resolutions people make each year for themselves with some tips to keep on track. We've all seen them and perhaps made them ourselves. But how often to we make resolutions for our homes? I would venture a guess almost never. I found this fantastic article on hgtv.com last year and it inspired me to action, just like watching one of their home improvement shows does so I thought I would share it again. Seriously, these are things that are totally do-able, and things that Paul's Ace Hardware can help you out with. So take a look, start writing down your 2017 Home Resolutions lists and let's get them DONE!
