One School, One Book

During the month of January, all three elementary schools will be embarking on a special project, an all-school book club called One School, One Book .  Every family will receive a copy of the same book - My Father's Dragon - and will be asked to read it together at home over the next few weeks. Our goal is to have each family commit to making the time so that your family can participate in this special activity. Of course, participation in this One School, One Book™ program is completely optional and not required.

Reading aloud at home is valuable because it better prepares children to be effective readers, and it is also a fun, worthwhile family activity. With the One School, One Book  program, we aim to build a community of readers at our school. Everyone - students, parents, teachers, even administrative staff - will all be following along together.

Before winter break, each child received a copy of My Father's Dragon as a Christmas gift. Along with the book, each child received a reading schedule so that families could keep up at home. Generally, families will be asked to read about 15 minutes each night. In school, children will be invited to answer daily trivia questions to encourage and reward attentive listening. Families will soon find that the children will take pride in knowing and anticipating the details of the story. Throughout the month, everyone will be talking about the adventure of Elmer as described in the book!

Happy reading!

Looking for a way to #GiveWhereYouLive?

If you would like to Help a Hurricane, we have a need at WHS. We have a number of students that need financial assistance with the technology fee for their Chromebook. You can learn more about the Chromebook 1:1 program and how you can Help a Hurricane in the  letter below.

We were overwhelmed with the early community response to this sponsorship program.  Our own WHS staff members were among the first to donate.  While we have now met the need for the current school year, we know that many of those students will face the same challenges in the fall. For that reason we have left the sponsorship program open for donations for those that would still like to give.

Through this technology initiative each and every WHS student will have technology at their fingertips, gaining the knowledge and skills that they need to be successful in school and after graduation.

Thank you, in advance, for Helping a Hurricane!
