Hogweed Notice
Over the past few summers the Town has received reports of hogweed in public areas. Residents are advised that it is only "Giant Hogweed" that poses a safety problem. The Town has requested identification from a horticulturist concerning a number of plants found near Town ponds. In all cases these have been identified as something else; usually Common Hogweed. There are several other non-harmful plant species that are mistaken for Giant Hogweed.

Giant Hogweed always has sharply-cut leaves that are shiny and has raised purple streaks and warts on the leaf stems and main flower stalk. All the other similar plants do not have this feature. If you come across a plant with these characteristics, please contact the Town at 782-1400. Please note that removal of Giant Hogweed is not recommended in the summer months.

For more information on Giant Hogweed, visit the Memorial University Botanical Garden website.
