SERVICE

Sunday, August 20, 10:00 AM,  "Defending Democracy," Rev. Tom Chulak

Throughout our history as Unitarian Universalists we have affirmed and defended democracy.  In fact some have called us a democratic faith.  In light of the current assault on democratic values and practices, Tom will challenge us to be true to our religion.
Tom Chulak is a member of the congregation and a retired Unitarian Universalist Minister residing in Ghent, NY.  Together with his wife Nicole Furnee, they are the owners of the Chatham Bookstore.

Music: Al DeSalvo

Homecoming!
Sunday, September 10

-- Bring water  (real or virtual) gathered during your summer (at home or away) to symbolize the regathering of our community.

-- Send a couple photos of your summer for inclusion in the slideshow to photos @albanyuu.org by Sept. 1.

-- Plan on lunch after the service! Everyone is invited to a light lunch in Channing hall right after the service. Please bring a "finger food" (no utensils and no heating up needed!) to share: sandwiches (cut in half), raw veggies, fruit, cheese and crackers, deviled eggs, or other appetizers. Drop off your contribution that morning in the kitchen. This is a nice time to catch up with friends and meet some new people after the summer's activities. See you then!

News from the Green Sanctuary Committee
Some of us will be traveling to see the total eclipse of the sun on Monday, August 21, 2017. We hope that the travelers will share their experience with us in an upcoming Windows. If the weather cooperates, the Capital District will have a partial eclipse. If you watch it, make sure you wear appropriate eye protection.
For those who may not make it outside for the eclipse, NASA should be telecasting it, starting at noon.  Try this site for it:

The Green Sanctuary summer planning potluck is coming up on August 25 , 5 p.m., at the home of the Bystroffs at 35 Pinewoods Ave. in Troy.  All are welcome so come and enjoy!  Bring a dish to share. Contact Chris with questions or directions at  [email protected]  or 518-272-1248.

Summer RE Session

Summer Session runs through the end of August! This is our more casual program for children in Pre-k through 5th grade. Older children are welcome to help out or attend the service with their families. We need adult volunteers to staff the program each Sunday. Parents and current or past RE volunteers are eligible.  Email Leah at  [email protected]  or indicate your interest to volunteer in room 24/25 or lead or assist a workshop in room 26 on the sign-up sheet on the Summer Bulletin Board in the main level hallway.

Can you lend a hand with RE set up?
August is the time to set up classroom closets with material for the semester and decorating bulletin boards. And it's much easier with a pair or team working together. Maybe you can't volunteer to be an RE guide, but you could donate a morning, an afternoon, or an evening of your time to the RE program. If you can help Leah out contact her at [email protected]

Surveys about your RE experience
Parents/caretakers and RE Guides - Have you filled out your survey yet? Please check your email for a parent/caretaker survey to help the REC and Leah make our RE program even better. Regardless of how often you attend, you're encouraged to give your feedback.

Now is the time to register your child for RE for 2017-18
You can register on line  HERE, pick up a form at the RE office or Leah can mail it to you.

Volunteer in RE to deepen your experience at Albany UU
Maybe you don't have children in the Religious Education program, but you are looking for a way to be more fully connected with the community at Albany UU. Volunteering for the pre-K; 3, 4; 5 or 6th grade team might just be your answer. Each of these teams is looking for one more member. As a member you can expect to lead one session a month and assist a team member once a month. More about the program, the RE calendar and offerings for the fall are at Leah's blog: http://members.albanyuu.org/wp/dre-blog/

As always, feel free to contact Leah Purcell at [email protected] with questions.
