St. Brendan the Navigator
Parish Renewal Plan
Update
At a congregational meeting on August 13, 2017, the people of St. Brendan's voted unanimously to adopt a 14-month Parish Renewal Plan that, in summary, commits the Parish to:
1. Grow as a welcoming, inclusive and caring parish;
2. Revisit and adopt a Parish Mission Statement that will be the motivation and focus for all that we is done in the Parish;
3. Develop a budget based on parish ministry priorities and conduct an extended stewardship campaign to fund those efforts;
4. Call a Priest in Charge at the end of the Renewal Period;
5. Communicate extensively on the status of the Renewal Plan and of
parish finances, and on the work of the Vestry and Ministries;
6. Conduct a congregation-wide survey to identify parishioners' interests and potential involvement in Parish Ministries;
7. Plan and implement worship and music celebrations encouraging lively and joyous worship;
8. Develop a focused Outreach Ministry with a strong ecumenical and collaborative impact on the community;
9. Adopt an effective and accountable leadership and ministry structure
for the Vestry and the Parish;
10. Adopt best management practices throughout the Parish including efficient and productive meetings

The Vestry met this past Tuesday (August 15) to start the work of implementing the Parish Renewal Plan adopted by the Parish last Sunday. We discussed
the importance of communicating to our parishioners throughout this process. The Renewal Plan, minutes of Vestry meetings, and monthly financial summaries will be posted in The Navigator e-Newsletter, on the website, and
in the church.
We will be meeting next week to consider our extant mission statements and will draft not more than three to present at our next Parish Meeting on September 10. We also started the process of organizing the various ministries and discussed the components of the ministry descriptions and how to best utilize the talents of our parishioners for these ministries. We decided that for the foreseeable future our Vestry will serve as the Renewal Team, the group that will strategize and make sure the Renewal Plan happens.
At the close of Sunday's meeting, Fr. Dufresne asked us to pray daily for the success of our Renewal Plan. Another request from Fr. Dufresene and your Renewal Team/Vestry: please read the weekly Navigator. We have much to communicate in the weeks ahead.

Financial Summary
Attached below are are summary statements of the Balance Sheet and Receipts and Disbursements year to date. While the year to date statement suggests
we are wildly ahead of our projected budget deficit, it is difficult to be too certain of that in view of the fact that revenue comes in in waves and for this year some expenses, particularly the clergy expenses, will be rear-ended because we have significantly increased our priestly presence beginning in June. What I think I can say with pretty good confidence is that at the end
of the year we may very well break even vis a vis our budget-a remarkable achievement. If we do, then we will in fact be able to pay more than 50%
of the Diocesan Assessment and come close to a true balanced budget.
This will bode very well indeed for 2018 as we increase our priestly presence significantly.

Scholarship Recipient To Attend Coffee Hour
Liza Moore, a resident of Orland, Me. and a 2017 graduate of George Stevens Academy was one of our two scholarship recipients.
Liza plans to start her college education at the College of the Atlantic in Bar Harbor very soon.
The Outreach Team has invited both recipients to come to a coffee hour to congratulate them on their accomplishments and wish them well on their education journey.
Liza will join us at our coffee hour this Sunday. We hope everyone will take a moment to greet Liza. Thank you.

Seminar on Finding Joy Continues
Rev. Dr. Edward Dufresne+ will continue the discussion on the topic, "Finding Joy" at 9am September 10th.
The main text for discussion is
The Book of Joy by the Dalai Lama and Archbishop Desmond Tutu, (Avery, New York, 2016). Topics include: What Is Joy?, Joy and Suffering, Joy Comes with Perspective and Acceptance, Joy in Humility and Humor, The Joy in Forgiveness, Joy and Gratitude, Joy and Generosity, Joy and Compassion, Joy in Being One with the World, and Joy in Being One with God.
The Fourth Session on September 10th will cover pp 277-348 - Being One with the World and pp171-190 - Joy in Being One with the Sacred.
All are welcome!

Outreach Meeting Update
The Outreach Committee met on July 11, 2017 and August 1, 2017 at the church. Our primary focus at these two meetings was the continuation of our discussion attempting to discern a specific mission statement for our outreach work.
At the July meeting, The Rev Stephen Hayward asked us to think about our" favorite moment" at St. Brendan's, and he would like to hear "our stories". Steve also asked us to write in 25 words or less a purpose statement which would reflect how we measured our work.
At the August meeting, we shared our "favorite moment" with Steve and each other. It was a very interesting to hear each other's favorite moment and recall events of the past. In fact, it was such an interesting event that someone suggested that the entire congregation share their "favorite moment" at coffee hour some Sunday morning. Hope that we can do this before Labor Day.
Steve's second homework assignment about writing a purpose statement did not result in any proposals. We will try again to do this for our September meeting.
One of the suggestions that Steve made was that we might partner with someone in the area as part of our outreach. For example, we might partner with Nancy Wynne, who lives in Stonington and has an active project in Guatemala where they raise money to build homes and schools.
Another suggestion which Steve made was that we might consider asking groups to whom we would like to support with our resources to meet with the entire congregation during coffee hour to hear their presentation.
Our focus appears to center around education and children, but we need to be more specific about what we want to do and develop a mission statement. This is not easy work, and we would be more than happy to receive any suggestions for a mission statement.

Scripture Notes for The Eleventh Sunday After Pentecost
In today's liturgy, the scriptures deal with the inclusivity of
God's call. The gospel reading brings a Canaanite woman to Jesus, asking that he heal her
daughter.
At first, Jesus responds that he is sent only to Jews. However, the woman's deep faith
moves him and he heals her daughter.
Joseph, sold in to slavery by his brothers, with God's help became the most powerful official of Egypt. When famine left the children of Jacob starving, they came to Egypt for food. After etting these unfaithful brothers live in suspense for
a time as to whether this great ruler would assist them, Joseph's love for them
led him to reveal his identity. He then brought all the familyto Egypt to live in prosperity.
In the second reading, Paul is dealing with the role of Jews and Gentiles in
God's plan.
Distressed that many of his fellow Jews have not accepted Jesus,
Paul nevertheless is certain that they, like the Gentiles, are part of that plan. Indeed, "The gifts and the calling of God [to the Jews] are irrevocable," he says.
Christianity stands over against those human movements that would exclude
some people. God's call is to every human being. Our gatherings as church must always be faithful to that and we must seek to mirror in our own congregations
the complete inclusivity of God's call to the human race.

In Our Prayers
We pray for those on our prayer list suffering and recovering from illnesses,
especially Jan Place, William, Pat Stoneburner, Holly, Carolyn Angel, Colin MacNaught, Shannon Cormier, Nancy Stearns, Daniel Harriman, Diane, John, Tom, Claudia, Kathy Gray, Hannah Scaife, Marcia Scott, Bob Harris, Sen. John McCain, Ann Ottesen, Henry 'Hank' Millon, Jennifer Hulsey and her family Byron, Ben, and Clair. We pray, also, for those who love and care for them.

We pray for all who suffer the effects of domestic violence and the violence
of bullying in our schools.
We pray for all peacemakers, and all those who work for justice.
We pray for all those serving in the armed forces of our country,
remembering, especially, Craig, Chris, and Graham.
We pray for all who govern, and we pray for the concerns of our local community, remembering, especially, our children, our young people, and
our isolated elderly.
We pray for Justin, Archbishop of Canterbury; Suheil, Bishop of Jerusalem; Michael, our Presiding Bishop; Steve, our Bishop; for the members of our vestry; and for all our members, whose ministries are varied and far-reaching.
In the Diocesan Cycle of Prayer, we pray for
the summer chapel congregations of St. George's, Tenant's Harbor and Summer Services, North Haven.
