The United Methodist Church of Evergreen
Pastor Russell Fletcher

10th Sunday after Pentecost
Sunday, August 20, 2017
Services at 8:30 and 10:30 am

Russell's Ritings,

Amidst all the actions and reactions currently - from Charlottesville to Pyongyang - I am reminded of a story about Booker T. Washington.  He was walking down 42nd Street in New York City carrying two heavy suitcases.  Because of their weight he was only able to walk short distances before putting them down to rest his tired arms.  At last he began to struggle visibly with them.  Setting them down once more, he was surprised when a man reached to pick one of them up.  Smiling, the man said, "You've about got more than you can carry, haven't you, brother?  I'm going your way; let me carry one for you."

The two men walked along 42nd Street, each carrying a suitcase, talking as if they were longtime friends.   Finally, they arrived at the hotel where Washington was staying; the stranger was thanked and took his leave.  The desk clerk recognized the good Samaritan, and informed Washington of his identity.Booker T. Washington would later write of the incident, saying, "and that was the first time I ever saw Theodore Roosevelt."

Help one another.  When you see a brother carrying a load, share the load.  That's the Christian Way!

I hope to see you Sunday!  The sermon is "The Good, The Bad, and The Ugly", continuing the series on David.  The text is from II Samuel 23.  We are gearing up for the fall programs, and programs for children, youth, and adults will be shared at both services.  After the late service we will eat cake to celebrate the starting of school, hear about the new programs, and then have a very brief council meeting to discuss purchasing a new van.

See you Sunday!
