Social Sciences  is now open. Register by March 31 to
 take advantage of our early bird rates.  Congress 2017 will run from May 27 to June 2 at Ryerson University. This year's program continues Congress favourites including Big Thinking lectures , Career Corner and Expo , and introduces Ryerson programming . We are pumped for Congress 2017 - are you?

Big Thinking on the Hill -
Feb 21


Join us on Parliament Hill on February 21 for the first Big Thinking event of 2017, featuring Matthew Hayday, Professor of History at the University of Guelph, who will give a talk entitled "Canadian-ness," citizen engagement, and Canada 150: Using history to inform policy". Annual conference post report

Read the event summary for the Federation's annual conference, "People, Place and Possibility: Cities and the Humanities and Social Sciences," held in partnership with the University of Toronto in November. Over 100 faculty, community members, students and funders came together to explore the role of HSS in addressing urban issues such as pluralism, democracy, innovation, reconciliation and research impacts.
2017 Federation election update
The nomination period for the 2017 Federation Board of Directors elections will begin later this month. General Assembly representatives will be notified by email, and others can expect to see more details in next month's Communiqué newsletter.



Canada Prizes jury announcement

The Federation is pleased to announce the jury members for the 2017 Canada Prizes. Finalists will be announced this spring, and the winners will be celebrated at a special awards ceremony at Congress 2017 at Ryerson University.

budget day

The next federal budget is expected in either February or March, and the Federation is looking forward to providing the HSS community with analysis and insight into this important document. If you haven't already done so, check out the Federation's 2017 pre-budget submission  and watch for our budget reaction after it is tabled .

Smart Ideas featured in UA

#SmartIdeas  researcher  Miao Song was interviewed by University Affairs magazine about her research in bringing artists and technology together to create interactive media. She is the last of a six-part series - including Marie-Odile Junker , Yoko Yoshida Louis Raymond   Jo-ann Archibald  and  Joel Westheimer - aimed at articulating the value and role of HSS.

University of Regina refugee outreach
Students from University of Regina's Faculty of Education have been volunteering to teach one-on-one English-language classes to refugee women. This rewarding program has allowed new Canadians to learn reading and writing skills and education students to gain valuable teaching experience. Find out  about the program here .
Ryerson student spotlight story
This June, eight years after arriving in Canada as an Afghan refugee , Nadjib Alamyar will graduate from Ryerson University's Immigration and Settlement Studies program. Earlier this year he received a Dennis Mock Student Leadership Award for outstanding voluntary extracurricular contributions. See more on this story here

 TCPS 2 (2014) - are open for public comment until January 31, 2017. If Federation member associations or institutions are planning to participate in this consultation, we would be pleased to receive a copy of your submission at [email protected].
Are you a storyteller?

The Social Sciences and Humanities Research Council has launched their annual #SSHRCStorytellers challenge. Open to all post-secondary students, this contest asks students to show Canadians how humanities and social sciences research is positively affecting our lives, our world and our future.
