We hope that your semester continues to engage our campus community in dialogue and action through social change efforts, and look forward to your participation in CASC courses and programs. As we continue to collaborate with students to improve our communications and outreach efforts, we want to formally invite your participation as current and prospective students in CASC Website Focus groups. If you are interested in sharing your feedback, reflections, and advice, sign up to join us in discussion, over lunch. The details are listed in CASC announcements.

Additionally, we are recruiting students to join the SW 300 DECLARE Social Justice retreat. This course  is a two day retreat that allows students to explore their motivations, pursuits and pathways toward social justice engagement in multiple contexts. The details on how to get involved are listed below in CASC announcements.

CASC Funding for Student Organizations
CASC students are involved in many activities around campus and we receive multiple requests for  funding. CASC has a limited pool of money for which CASC students are eligible to apply up to $250. In order to apply for a CASC grant, you must be part of a registered student org and have an SOAS account. There are four  funding deadlines throughout the year- October 1, December 1, January 15, and March 15. Please allow 2-3 weeks for a response.  To apply for  funding , students must  submit a funding proposal Contact the CASC office with questions.

CASC Drop-In 
For the 2017 Winter Semester the drop in hours for CASC are on Wednesdays from 1PM-4PM in rooms 3833 and 3831 in the School of Social Work. Stop by if you have questions related to academic advising regarding the minor, course planning, senior audits, declaring the minor and any other general questions regarding CASC! 

CASC Website Focus Groups
The CASC Programming team is seeking your feedback, inquiry, and support updating the existing CASC minor website. If you are a current or prospective CASC student, we encourage your participation in a focus group to help us transform the website. Your direct feedback will ensure that the virtual spaces we develop reflect the needs and desires of our diverse student body. We hope you consider joining us! Lunch will be provided, and the sessions will be held in the School of Social Work Room B770. Sign up today!

SW 300, DECLARE: A Social Justice Retreat
DECLARE is a two day retreat that allows you to dive deeply into thinking about your identities, your social justice work, and how you can work to implement change. The retreat is open to all declared CASC minors and students who have met with a CASC adviser and plan to declare the minor.   Registration : In order to receive a permission to enroll, please complete the DECLARE Petition Form . You must complete a course permission no later than December 9th If you have any questions, contact Amber . You will be notified by December 10th if you are granted permission into the course.

Living and Working Around the World: Conversations with Returned Peace Corps Volunteers
This event, sponsored in conjunction with the International Institute and the Department of Afroamerican and African Studies, will feature Returned Peace Corps Volunteers who have served all over the world. Students will divide into small groups based on their regional interests and get to hear stories RPCVs who served there. This event is for those interested in serving in the PC and interested in living or working abroad. Dinner will be served. Register for this event

Galvanizing Social Justice Through Comics (Co-sponsored by CASC)
Leading graphic historical novelist Joe Sacco (Days of Destruction, Days of Revolt, Footnote in Gaza, Safe Area Gorazde) will chronicle how and why he uses the graphic novel format to catalyze social justice and human rights struggles in the U.S. and around the world. This presentation is part of a series on social justice-oriented graphic novels organized by the International Institute's Enterprise-funded Conflict and Peace Initiative.

SAAN Conference: Meridian 2017
The South Asian Awareness Network (SAAN) is holding their annual conference titled: "Meridian 2017: Exploring Intersections, Challenging our Perceptions, Reaching New Heights." Participants will be part of a two day conference of entertainment, workshops, and speakers from all over the world who incorporate social justice into their everyday lives.This year's speakers include Azmat Khan and Babbu the Painter. Shaun King: A Talk On Activism And Movement Building

Hidden Figures: The Untold Story of the Black Women Who Helped Win The Space Race
Margot Lee Shetterly, author of Hidden Figures, talks about race, gender, science, the history of technology, and much else. She shows us the surprising ways that women and people of color have contributed to American innovation while pursuing the American Dream. There is a fireside chat and book signing to follow the presentation at 7PM in the Stamps Auditorium.

Spectra: Call for Performers
UMMA, in partnership with Arts at Michigan, Michigan Community Scholars Program, Michigan in Color, and WCBN invite performers to join in a night to share our voices with one another. Whether through tone, pitch, meter, or rhyme, spoken art and song express our humanity. Please submit a short written proposal of your performance not exceeding ten minutes. Sports Study Abroad Programs
CGIS is offering a variety of new opportunities to study sports and sport culture abroad. Explore your passion for sports with new lenses including cultural studies, ethics, business, social science, and more. These programs are designed for students with internships, student athletes and students with tight summer schedules. Jewish Communal Leadership Program
For incoming MSW students, the Jewish Communal Leadership Program (JCLP) at the University of Michigan School of Social Work is now accepting applications for next fall. JCLP is a leadership program that integrates Jewish communal learning with social work practice and an emphasis on social justice. Hijabi Monologues: Halfway Hijabi
In light of the escalation in hate crimes targeted against Muslim veiled women (Hijabi's) following the 2016 Presidential Election, there will be an event called the "Hijabi Monologues: Halfway Hijabi." The organizers of the event ask any Hijab-wearing women interested in performing at the event to please email at either alyiaha@umich.edu or fshaidar@umich.edu. Performances can be anything pertinent, i.e. your hijab story, poetry, art. This is an indispensable opportunity to learn about the hijab - its history and its modernity - as well as provide a safe space for Hijabi's to share their unheard experiences with a compassionate audience.

U-M Library Mini-Grant
U-M Library is offering mini-grants (up to $1,000) to support innovative and collaborative projects that make a real-life impact. Projects must strengthen community partnerships, enhance global scholarship, and/or advocate for diversity and inclusion. Davis Projects for Peace
The Edward Ginsberg Center for Community Service and Learning is pleased to announce the Davis Projects for Peace initiative. Projects for peace  summer-long projects designed and implemented by undergraduate students who are passionate about peace. The initiative prepares students as ethical global leaders by providing the resources to execute innovative grassroots project ideas. The selected project proposal will be funded up to $10,000 and implemented during summer of 2017. Proposals due midnight on Monday, January 23. Learn more and apply now

Bonderman Fellowship Information Session
The Bonderman Travel Fellowship offers 4 graduating LSA seniors an  8-month  international trek. Each spring, 4 fellows receive  $20,000  to travel to at least  6 countries  in 2 regions of the world where they'll immerse themselves in independent and enriching explorations. Want to learn more? The National Security Education Program (NSEP) David L. Geriatric Joy Video Contest
We know that you are creative, have good ideas, and can use a thousand dollars. Leadership Engagement Scholarship
The Leadership Engagement Scholarship is a new scholarship initiated by the Central Student Government (CSG) that addresses the financial burden of students with cost barriers to engaging co-curricular activities. This fund supports student leadership in any and every avenue of campus life, such as Greek Life, student government, club sports, and the performing arts sector. International Institute Fellowships
The International Institute and its affiliated centers offer a number of awards for U-M students (of all academic levels and from all colleges and schools) wishing to participate in internships or conduct research outside the U.S. Maximum funding amounts range from $2,500-$10,000, depending on the award.  Learn more and apply today.

Arts Ambassador
The Arts Ambassador Program is designed to increase student awareness of the arts on campus and connect with other students who share an interest in the arts. They are looking for enthusiastic, outgoing students who have interest in the arts and are living in a Residence Hall or living community (fraternity/sorority house, co-op, etc.). Arts Ambassadors are unpaid volunteers who serve within their living communities as a resource for arts opportunities on campus. Applications for Winter 2017 are due January 20. Doris Duke Conservation Scholars Program
The Doris Duke Conservation Scholars Program (DDCSP UM) is a two-year research and internship opportunity for undergraduate students interested in conservation, nature, and the environment. The program is aimed at bringing more undergraduates currently underrepresented in the environmental field into the conservation arena. Success By 6 Internship
The Success by 6 Great Start Collaborative vision is that every child in Washtenaw County enters school healthy and ready to succeed. The internship includes a mix of these projects depending on time available and interest: administrative support for Great Start Smile program, support in the planning of Community Events and assisting with Action Team projects related to our strategic plan. President's Advisory Committee for Labor Standards and Human Rights (PACLSHR)
The PACLSHR is now soliciting applications to put together a research team to conduct a follow up study which will focus on the two select categories of food and electronics to a) assess labor standards and human rights issues, b) identify external partners (e.g., FLA / WRC or other sector specific organizations) to assist the university, c) identify select universities who share similar perspectives and are willing to work with us, and d) identify feasible pathways for improving labor standards in these two categories that outlines necessary resources (internal and external) and an organizational structure, as well as appropriate (direct and indirect) cost impacts.
